So it's been on the news and the memes on facebook have just taken the piss out of it all but I'm honestly a little bit concerned by the threat of nuclear winter.

    What are your thoughts?

    WW3? No
    A war? Probably yeah

Obviously no one really knows how strong NK really is, but are they so strong to the point where the united states' allies will have to interfere?
Till now, Obama hasn't even started evacuating or anything related, which means either one, they are sure that NK are bluffing, or two, they believe they can outweigh North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Evacuating? Are you on crack?! I guarantee North Korea will not go so far as to fire a ballistic missile at Seoul, let alone a nuclear one at Los Angeles... apparently the South Koreans aren't worried at all, it's all in a day's work for them and it's only rarely that this gets reported over here.

    Crack? No not at all
Honestly, that's something everyone does, everyone ASSUMES NK won't attack, they ASSUME that they're weak.

First rule in war, never underestimate your enemy.

I think there's going to be a WW3 only if Russia and China come to the table. But for now I just see a north korean nuclear bomb being intercepted in the Pacific and a deadly response by US+SK similar do Hiroshima. After that North Korea is going to surrender if Russia and China stay away.

You're concerned about North Korea? Don't be, we're well prepared and they haven't got a chance by their track records. Almost the entire world are against their views.

Isn't it just the same as the cold war? Mutually Assured Destruction? If North Korea fire, USA will fire back and both will be destroyed. So by starting a nuclear war, they are effectively destroying themselves.

I'm not too sure how correct this would be because I have no idea about the level of defence systems that are possible today.

Not quite, the cold war involved Russia, a big and powerful country, with the technology and weaponry to do serious damage.
North Korea is insignificant. It uses bellicose rhetoric in order to get economical aid for 'co-operating' which is, in essence, similar to a toddler getting a reward if it stops banging it's head against a wall.

No, I don't. Even if I thought their threats were anything serious, you can't have a world war with one [fairly weak] country against the rest of the world. Well, I suppose you can - but I'm not sure even North Korea would be daft enough to take on the rest of the world alone. I don't believe that China or Russia would stay faithful to North Korea.

    Nope, not at all.

Globalism is all-pervading and all-consuming. North Korea is isolationist and does not succumb to the influence of globalism - hence why it is "bad".

Developed countries will never just go to war anymore over petty things - many have tasted money now and they want more. It is in China and Russia's interest not to go to war; the same goes for the United States.

People get all excited at the prospect of WW3 - I hate to burst your bubble but WW3 will not be any time soon and it will not be over the usual things. Globalism and greed and money and resources are not the important thing. China and America's economies and trading relationships are so intertwined that it would be economic suicide for both sides were they to war against each other.

If something does erupt on the Korean peninsula, it will be contained in that place and at worst, in that part of Asia. Unless of course...unless of course, Korea has some shocking serious weapons of mass destruction and manages to harm America with it - then no crystal ball will be able to see what occurs thereafter...

North Korea wouldn't benefit at all from firing a nuclear missile against anything - let alone start WW3. If they do anything, they'd be blown apart by the US and other countries.
An apparent in the Danish news said that the only country the USA wouldn't be able to wipe out the military with an aircraft carrier with everything that follows, including the entire escort fleet, is Israel. They needed two. If that's true, I don't know, but I'm absolutely certain Mr. Jong is still sane enough to know that he does not benefit at all from firing a missile.

What Kim Jong Un is doing is that he's keeping his own people down. It's always good to make other countries enemies, because it means that his own position is secure. The people of North Korea haven't got access to the Internet, which means that they have to believe everything the government is saying. If the people knew which position they were actually in, I believe that something like the current events in Syria (and Libya) would happen. If the government would then slaughter everyone, I don't know, but Kim and the government is afraid of their own people.

The problem with M.A.D. is that it relies upon a fear of annihilation of your people. It's abundantly clear that successive North Korean leaderships have no concern about sacrificing an unlimited number of their people for no purpose whatsoever.

The irony is that it would be South Korea and the United States who would be more concerned about killing these people than the North Koreans.

    Probably not.

First, North Korea would probably nuke/invade/go to war with South Korea.

Then, the whole world would know that NK would nuke America next. And that would only happen if they have perfected the long range missiles. Which, for now, they haven't.

Besides, NK's sole ally, China have condemned their actions, so what are NK REALLY going to do? Go to war with America, with no allies and the entire UN condemning them?

Also, American capabilities are probably much more extensive than NK's. Hence, the moment NK does something big, nuclear or war related, America or some other country are going to something bigger to stop them.

I find all the posturing most unsettling. It is upsetting for the South Koreans to be under constant threat from a relatively young ruler who has a big toy box of weaponary and a vast army at his command. Do ou think he really understands that USA have still got more in their toybox than he has. The big worry is that Japan will take a side.
