Depends what you make of it! You could use it as an opportunity to get more related work experience - and even combine that with travel. There are a few companies (Teaching & Projects Abroad & Travellers, for example) that offer the chance to go to another, poorer country and help out in hospitals there - apparently allowing you more involvement than you'd ever get at a hospital in the UK.

In terms of admissions point of view, if you spend it well then it's good. Or at least, if you can be convincing enough that you're going to spend it well
