I would bring a checkbook into the game, announce I will steal whatever they say and tell them to split, whip out the checkbook and write a check for half the money.

    Steal.

I'd rather have nothing than see the other person get all of it while I still get nothing.

I'd say that I'm going to split but then steal.

I'd be lying and no one would guess it, they'd all fall for the trap and I'd get all the money :ahee:

    Steal every time.

Did you watch the episode where they put together four of the biggest 'losers' (i.e. those who said split and their opponent said steal) to see what happened?

    Spoiler:
    Show
They both split at the end

    Game theory says steal
This is practically a criticism of naive game theory.

    Edit: Also, split.

    Steal.

Steal- 50% chance I get no money, 50% chance I get all the money.
Split- 50% chance I get no money, 50% chance I get half the money.

This is how it is done if you want to guarantee a split.

This was very cruel - all you saying steal, you may not have the guts to do this on TV

    Four outcomes:
Split: you have nothing, opposition has everything
Split:You have half, opponent has half
Steal: You have nothing, opposition has nothing
Steal: You have everything, opposition has nothing

    Logic says steal.

Split. If I lose so be it, just shows how untrustworth the other person is.

    Your numbers are questionable.

    Alternatively;
Split - 100% chance of participants receiving prizes
Steal - <100% chance of participants receiving prizes. 0% if both are 'rational'.

Worked once why should it work again?

That guy was pure class though. Telling the other person steal is worthless but a hope that if he is decent he will split the money in the dresser lol.

If everyone split, then yes, 100% chance of receiving prizes. However, not everyone splits so that percentage is crap.
I agree that there's less than 100% of participants receiving prizes if someone were to steal, well done.

Not everyone's rational, some people are emotional. Some people choose to put their emotions before their logic, thus your last percentage is also crap.

I think you've failed to read my post properly. I said 100% of participants receiving prizes, not you. So my logic there is absolutely correct.
Come now, if you're going to make a post claiming to be logical, you're going to have to make a better response than attempted condescension.

Uh, my last percentage is also true. I clearly stated my assumptions; if everyone is 'rational', (and I use my inverted commas with feeling), then nobody ever wins. Clearly this is suboptimal.

No, it is not crap, you just didn't understand what he wrote.

If one person splits, then there is 100% chance that at least one participant will get a prize.

If one person steals, then there is less than 100% chance that at least one person gets a prize.
