    Butanol is:
    CH3CH2CH2CH2OH

Why is it called butanol and not butan-1-ol? My book says if the chain is longer than ethanol, we need to indicate where the alcohol group is and butanol has a longer chain length than ethanol.

Sometimes folks are lazy and just call it butanol, but as you point out it's not correct ...

It used to be called n-butanol and before that n-butyl alcohol.
