UCLAN (Preston)

Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone else around here is going to this uni in Sept? I've just filled out my forms for library cards and the like, complete with slightly green looking passport photos of myself lol.

Does anyone know what the music scene in and around Preston is like? I was planning on getting a band together once I get there, for a bit of musical creativity and stimulation lol, feel free to PM me if you are interested in getting involved in that by the way.

Someone I spoke to a while back said music up north (so to speak) is rubbish, but I can't believe that! So what sort of differences are there between things around London and things around Manchester. Not necessarily linked to music, just generally, don't want to get my head kicked in by doing/saying something stupid do I!

Preston itself doesn't have a particularly lively music scene, although having said that I have seen a good few decent bands this last year. The uni and guild hall rarely attract big name acts, so you will have to go to Manc for those, but there are a lot of good local bands playing the clubs and pubs who are well worth checking out (personal faves being The Idanos http://www.theidanos.com/ )

Manchester on the other hand has arguably the best music scene in the country, with something to suit every taste, and with a lot of talentes, original artists/bands emerging all the time. Liverpool is also not bad either in this respect.
Thanks very much for the info, I was guessing Mancs would cater my needs but didn't want to assume anything, so thanks a lot.

One more thing, is there a big Tesco about, or is it just the Express one? The stupid locator thing is down on the Tesco site...*sigh*

I don't think there is a big tesco handy (at least I have never seen one).

There is a massive Asda on the outskirts, with a regular bus service every 12 minutes more or less all week. There is also a big Sainsburys near PNE football stadium, and a Morrisons on the docks.
prestons music scene is quite lively actually, for a small city, there's quite a few live band nights and a lot of local bands, although quality is a different matter..

there's some good rock/indie clubs around too like 'the venue'(aka the 12 bar), the warehouse, 53 degrees, and even squires play some decent songs now and again.

53 degrees has got some good bands recently too such as dirty pretty things, futureheads, gary numan, cooper temple clause, maximo park, the crimea, the subways...
Hey hey people, got my accomadation offer this morning, Brun Hall, anyone else got theirs? The money is about what I guessed so that's cool :-) It looks like the hall is on campus too which is cool, just want to be there now lol.

yeah the music scene around here is pretty decent actually considering how small this place is.
squirrel commander is right and yeah we get a lot of pretty huge bands playing (though some of them arent/havent been huge yet when they play here...). We had We Are Scientists play 53 in February and the venue there is a really nice little place so if it's gigs you're into Preston is ace.

Plus theres easy transport links with coaches or trains from here to manchester, liverpool, london and birmingham, i often travel for gigs. i've never noticed any major differences between the cities to be honest. and the music up here is certainly not rubbish.. kick your friend up the arse, please :p:

theres a tesco express here..? erm.. i didn't know this? haha. nearest big Tesco is Chorley.
Heh thanks for the info dude, I will be sure to glady kick my friend no trouble heh. Any more random info you think I might find interesting/useful then feel free to tell.

Yeah I think I was a bit harsh about the music scene, I suppose I've been spoiled by 3 years living in Manchester.

There are some top local bands though, and I went to a private festival thing last weekend which was totally ace - seeing lots of top live local bands
