    Okay what's the difference between hexadecimal numbers and using MATLAB as format hex? I need to show that 12.6 is 402499999999999a how do I even begin without using matlab!

    You're trying to look at the bit pattern used to represent an ieee double precision float as hex (i think)
    it's easy in C, have you got a c compiler?

    Fwiw i don't think you're right, I think that hex corresponds to 10.3.
