I think i have two options of getting my degree graded. The first way is from a mix of grades achieved in the second and third year...the second way is just all from my 3rd year.

How is everyone else assessed?

In my first degree, it was marks from my second, third and fourth years in the weighting 2:3:4. Which seemed eminently sensible.

Four grades from my 2nd year and all eight from final year.

Relying on just the final year puts a lot of pressure on you to perform amazingly in a short space of time (depending on what overall degree level you want) ...scary stuff.

Don't get an option, second year is worth 30% and your third year is worth 70% of the overall classification.

If you want specifics…second year is worth 1/3 and third year is worth 2/3.

In the second year, I did six 20 credit modules, each assessed by one essay (worth 33.5%) and one exam (worth 66.5%)

In the third year, still six 20 credit modules – but the assessment was totally different. I did three special subjects (one essay each, 5,000 words each, worth 100%), a group research project (counts as two modules), which was assessed by an individual report of 5,000 words, a 10 minute individual presentation in the first semester, then a 8,000 word group report, minutes of the meetings and individual self assessment (1,500 words) in the second semester. We should have done a 90 minute group presentation last week as well, but it was cancelled because of the assessment boycott. I also did an 8,500 word dissertation.

wot they all said...second year is worth 1/3 and third year is worth 2/3.
As for options...what do you mean 'options'? Most of us don't have the luxury of options in terms of how our final marks are determined.

I take it that's Oxford? I know of a family friend, from Oxford *i think*, who was ill and couldn't take his third year exams and he had worked his arse off for those end of year exams. He had to take them the following year.

Do you think your system of assessment is good?

Its strange the variation in assesments. I mean 10% in year 1 seems more fair than 100% in year 3 because the choice is being examined totally on the hardest year of the course or being part examined on each year of the course. Imagine if you were asked to substitute 10% from your last year into the year 1 marks - you would jump at the chance (material more easy in year 1).

Cambridge. I think it's a bit crap, I've been ill for 2 weeks this term (of a term of 4 weeks) and get no consideration at all for it!
