    Why do people think this?

Wanting to keep your own things so you can enjoy them: selfish.
Wanting to take things from other people by force so you can enjoy them: apparently not selfish.

Are you still on about this? You won't get it, will you?

The statements you wrote are pretty vague- it depends on the circumstances of the situation.

Actually, the opposite is true... you've heard of taxation, right?

The point of taxation for social welfare, is not for You to benefit, but for the whole of society to. Something apparently that is completely alien to people like the OP, is the idea that people may want policy for reasons other than their immediate benefit. What does display a mindset, is the assumption that the desire for social welfare, is for selfish reasons.
