You may have received the news that the University of Glamorgan and Newport University will be merging to form University of South Wales. What are your views and opinions on this? Will it improve our prospects for after university? I am currently of mixed opinion and was hoping this thread may help me

Yeah I just found out today. I also have mixed opinions cause I am starting at Glamorgan this September (well I guess south wales now) and the course I picked is kinda linked to another university so I don't know if that has changed or what.

This is both old news and a shotgun marriage. The Welsh government told the Welsh universities to merge or else.

Hi guys, I am a current student at USW former Glamorgan in my second year as well as a student ambassador.

I too was of mixed opinion when I heard about it but really it has not changed a great deal as of yet and wont do for a while still.

It is all about bringing both sides strengths together...each university had their own strong courses they offered and now share it and their resources for the students.

I can see why people do not like it but honestly it is going to take time to make a real difference. many of the changes to courses will not be affecting students for this September and not much will change for students next year.

Courses will stay campus specific for the seeable future. The merge gives you a choice and where you want to study if there are multiples of the same course across sites and people can apply for both the courses if they want.

I do not feel that either university is a pile of **** like the person before me stated, every uni has individual strengths and weaknesses, these two universities are just two of those maybe not so well known in the different areas.

Check out these blogs to explain a bit more about the merger:

I am a third year at Glamorgan and I don't like it
I chose the University of Glamorgan, not some newfangled super-uni. But ah well, what can I do about it? At least my graduation certificates etc are still going to have Glamorgan on it.
