why is CH4(g) + 1½O2(g) -> CO(g) + 2H2O(g) less exothermic than CH4(g) + 1½O2(g) -> CO(g) + 2H2O(l), where water is a liquid?

Post in the study help section in future.
Its because the enthalpy of formation of H2O(g) is less exothermic than H2O(l)
