I spent £26 on the Grand National, my return was a grand £14. I also won £15 on a scratch card. I'm not the luckiest but a friend won £10 000 on a scratch card and a friend of a friend £100000!!

At a charity casino (pay £10 entry and get 10 chips) I sat at the blackjack table for several hours.

At the end of the night, I had 300,000 chips in my account, the table had run out and was having to issue me IOU's on pieces of paper. I won the top prize of the night, which was a TV.

Had it been real money of course, I wouldn't have allowed it to get that far, and of course I was able to take more risks, gambling larger amounts, knowing it wasn't 'real money'.

And what with the format of the casino, I didn't have to beat the banker, just the next highest 'winner', which I did by two orders of magnitude. So having the blackjack tables in your head is going to be a big advantage over someone who is just playing it as they see it.

so you basically pulled off a £10 to £300k casino night without it being worth real money?

In my opinion, to win big, you have to risk big money.

I went to casino for the first time a couple of weeks ago for a friends birthday, and I saw this guy on a roulette table put down £180 in chips on one game. Won A LOT. Much more than he put down. I think he left with around £3,000 in total that night.

I only lost about a tenner. I was up and down all night on various games.

Pretty much. But like I said, I would never have gotten that far with real money - near the end of the evening (but before I saw I was way ahead of the next competitor), I was often gambling 10,000 chips on the turn of a single hand. It may have even been more, but they wouldn't let me play any more than 5 x 1000 value chips at a time (unless you are doubling down or splitting the hand).

The bigger the risk, the bigger the potential payoff, but equally, the bigger the risk, the bigger your potential loss.

Just like the story of the man who goes to Vegas with his wife (amounts may vary, but the story is a good one).

After the day in the city, they go back to the hotel, which also happens to be a casino, as many of those in Vegas are. She isn't much interested in gambling, so she has an early night. He on the other hand cashes in $10 worth of chips and decides to make an evening of it. After a few hours and a good run of luck, he has $300,000. He plays on, but his luck runs out and he ends up losing it all. When he gets back to his hotel room and gets in bed with his wife, she asks him how he did. "I lost $10."

I'm not saying not to trust the Internet, but there's an alarming discrepancy between the number of iPads I've won, & the number of iPads I own.

Me and my friends at MIT along with one of our professors used to count cards and go into Vegas once in a while and win loads of money. Once I got so drunk I wasn't paying attention. I lost 300k in one night.
