Hi, I am helping my nephew with his application for student finance

His mother is English, moved to South Africa as a teenager, married there, and my nephew was born there.

His parents divorced and his mother returned to England with him, about 10 years ago.

He has a British passport - so does she. He has vitually no contact with his real father and certainly no financial support.

In making his application there is a question about whether a parent has worked abroad since 2010 - presumably his father has, but he has no way of finding out - does this mean he cannot apply online? Or can his absent father be ignored - he is only a parent in the strict legal sense.

Hope you can help, thanks, RB

    Hi Broad,

We only require household income so if one parent isn't ordinarily part of the household we won't need his financial information or details.

We may require evidence or proof that the student's Mother is a single person however.

    Hope this helps,
    Mark-Lee
