When you are writing a critical essay on a play is it okay to quote a conversation between two people? Not a long one, just a couple of lines between them. If so, how do you quote this? Can you do it all together or do you need to do this for example:
He said 'quote' and then she replied 'quote'.

And can you quote one person's lines and call it dialogue and talk about the playwright's successful use of dialogue.
Or do you have to quote two people to talk about dialogue?

You can do it but my English teacher last year recommended that you avoid using this method as it can sometimes cause confusion and the essay won't flow as naturally.
