Today is April 16th 2013. Passing over the minor details, you have been granted the chance to "travel back" to 21 April 1889, Austria-Hungary, a day after baby Adolf Hitler was born.

Would you take up this chance? Would you kill baby Hitler, if you could?

You hear this question posed hypothetically occasionally and assume that it is obvious that you should do it. But it would be ignorant to assume that national socialism and the holocaust was solely the idea of hitler and couldnt have happened without him..

Plus even if it was then surely it would be easier to go back in time and help him out with his art career so he can get a stable job and be contented and not go to prison, not sell mein kampf and not pursue politics so desperately

How would you know it was him though? All babies look the same. You might be killing an innocent baby.

It would be purely gambling without knowing what sort of ripple effect his death would have so no.

Because a hegemonic Russia would fill the void that the Nazis would have had they not existed?

No, because there's absolutely no confirmation that Hitler would have turned out in that reality as he did in our reality. It'd probably be more sensible to subtly influence his life at various points to prevent him from becoming antisemitic.

Having said that, fascism arose in several countries after the 1929 depression. It's very possible that a similar thing may have happened with Hitler.

But he was the main reason millions upon millions of Jewish people died.

In order to stop that, or have a good chance of stopping that from happening of course I would.

1 life who will grow up to murder vs millions of innocent lives.

The German economy was in a pretty appalling state at the time Hitler rose to power. Historically, Germans had a tendency to opt for dictatorial leaders, e.g. Bismarck (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know much about this ) Whilst Hitler is regarded as one of the most evil men in history, and the atrocities his ruling resulted in are unforgivable, maybe if he hadn't have rose to power, someone equally/more demented would have done, because at that time Germany was looking for guidance and wanted a strong leader. This is all hypothetical but it's scary to consider the idea of changing history XD

No, although I'm against what Hitler did and how he did it, you have to keep in mind that even if you could kill Hitler, WW2 was probably inevitable. The terms of the treaty of Versailles were too harsh on Germany and Germany probably would have started another war to abolish the treaty. Or just got another extremist in power instead of Hitler. People were desperate, extremists offered another way out.

Anyway, before Hitler turned all treaty-abolishing, war-raging and Uk/France/USA and other allies hating, the people of Germany thought he was great. Unemployment fell and he was getting the treaty of Versailles abolished, bit by bit and as the Germans thought it was too harsh, they saw him as a great leader.

    Do a king Herod

OP i voted no. The war would of still happened, probably at a later date though since the nazi's still would of gained power. It would probably of been used with more nuclear weapons, killing even more people, along with the holocaust, as he wasn't the only person who backed it. Moreover, Hitler made many military mistakes, he helped us win the war. (unconsciously) It would be kill to remove a good asset.

No he was not, he wasn't the only main character in it all, the holocaust would of still happened.
