With some online learning sites, such as Coursera, it is possible to pay for a verified certificate as proof that you partook in one of their classes. I'm wondering if anyone here has tried using a certificates from online-courses when applying to university, and if any universities take them into account.

I did a Coursera course, but I didn't pay for a verified certificate, and universities seemed to like it. It was brought up in several of my interviews, so at the very least it gave me something to talk about.
But I wouldn't bother paying for a certificate - universities will care what you did and what you learnt from it. They won't care if you have a piece of paper confirming it (a copy of the course records on the Cousera website would provide evidence if they ask for it, but I doubt they will).
