I am currently in part time employment in a totally unrelated job and my aim is DMU to study Adult Nursing in 2014.
I would like a related job to help my university application and have been firing off job applications like there is no tomorrow!! A few that sound particularly interesting are level 2 HCA's. They are looking for numerous part/full time staff to work at all 3 big local hospitals and I would adore this job!
Did any of you start as HCAs with no experience? What are part time hours like? I honestly don't think I have a cat in hells chance but its worth a shot! Am I right in thinking level 3 HSAs have some form of NVQ qualification so I may be up against 'some' with no experience? How hard is studying and holding down a job? I have 5 school age children but very supportive folks and a diamond of a husband.
    Thank you in advance

I worked as a HCA whilst studying nursing, I'd have not been able to do the course otherwise. I did't have kids at the time though. Some of the parents on my course did work as bank HCA's during their course, if the supports there then go for it.

    Thank you for your reply.
Am I daft in thinking that this is a good starting role or would hospitals rather I had some sort of previous experience? Were you part time? What kind of shifts did you work?

I got my role as a bank HCA after I had started as a student nurse, so they accepted my previous placement experience as experience for the post. Some places will employ people without experience. I worked shifts that I picked and chose, thats the joy of being on the bank and makes it good for being a student nurse as you can fit the shifts round everything.

I started as a full time band 2 HCA 18 months ago with zero healthcare experience.

    Now a band 2 HCA in A&E.
