    Hmmmm, I'm confused...

    I've just done a spearmans rank correlation for soil depth against soil temperature and got 0.73. As far as I know, this should mean a weak positive correlation, as depth increases so does temperature. I wasn't expecting this & looking at my results I think it should be the other way around, temperature decreases with depth. I don't understand it. If there is no soil, it's going to be heated quicker etc.
    Can any one either tell me where I may have gone wrong (hopless at maths) or think of reasons why the temperature would increase with depth?

    When you ranked the actual data, did you do it the same on both of them. By that I mean, did you label the highest on each type as '1'. Or did you label the highest on the soil as '1' then label the lowest on tempreture as '1'?

    Spearman's correlation is an indicator. -1 represents negative correlation, 0 represents no correlation and 1 represents strong correlation. Therefore a figure of 0.73 actually indicates that there is some fairly strong positive correlation.
