They place cows higher then a lot of things. But women aren't treated well there, Funny however if this was Pakistan they would blame on it Islam.

It's not just in India, even here women are also unequal to animals as well, which is why we have human rights laid out distinct from animal rights.

No. That's not true at all. India's just a little bit "traditional". Where women are expected to do domestic work while men earn money. Having said that, they are not restricted by the law to do so. Many women do work and earn alongside their husbands. I'm sure if Indians were given a choice of who to let live between a cow and a female, they'd choose the female.

From my experience, it depends on a number of factors.

In the large cities (Delhi, Mumbai, etc.), amongst the middle classes, there is not an issue of inequality amongst men and women, especially not to the extent that the media portrays India. In fact, the middle classes in are actually very progressive and the fact that there has been a female president of the Indian National Congress for nearly 15 years.

However, amongst the working classes and the poor (in cities and in rural areas) there is a large issue. Women are seen as subservient and do stick more closely to the 'traditional'/old-fashioned view of men and women which was prevalent in the West until the 50s.
