I know someone who goes to Salford uni and does the diploma. she is in wednesday, thursday and friday 10-4. Then obviously on placement it varies!
But she says the degree students timetable is different to that, think's that they are in similar hours but more days.

I am UCE Birmingham and our timetable changes VERY regularly, which is very annoying when I am trying to arrange childcare, etc. There doesnt seem to be any consistency either some weeks we are in one day , some two days and sometimes three times a week. Classes can start at ten and go on til just after five or start at 1pm and go on til after 7pm.I think every uni has its own timetable, I have heard that Birmingham uni start at ten in the morning and finsh at three in the afternoon with no late lectures. Hope this helps

i do the degree at Salford uni!

yeah we're in 10-4 monday-friday, for most of the first year at least although they are more generous with days off at the start of the course.

but that's not always the case, it depends entirely on the module. for the one i'm doing now i only have to be in for half a day, once a week.

No , your uni might be different, which one are you going to?, it varies from uni to uni. Dont worry!!! , anyway the late lectures we have usually finish early, in fact I have been at uni for five weeks now and all of my lectures have finished early, which means the younger ones usually go off down the pub!!!!!!!!!!!

going to teh pub like the sound of that, i want to go either manchester or nottigham!

I know that northampton university publish their nursing/midwifery timetables on their website.
I don't know whether any other unis do this but it might be worth checking out, because you might get an idea of what yours will be like.
I also know that there are no placements until 4weeks into the course for northampton, it's all lectures up until then, so that might be another thing to check out.

I don't think King's post it btw, i looked thoroughly on their site a few weeks back.
Although i don't think their website is very user-friendly, so there well could be a way of finding out!
ah well, meh to that.

When we started last month we were given a website address for the uni students, I dont know if I can give it out on here so I wont, but basically it had loads of info , including our timetables. So you might have to wait till you get to uni to find out if there is a website( which is part of the faculty!!!!) which tells you everything you will need to know. Each uni should have its own intranet , yours probably has one too.

To current students in the 1st year do we do placements on the weekend?

Reply 11

Yes, I would have thought so, when you are on placement you are generally treated as though you work there, with obvious exceptions of course there are things that you cannot do as a student nurse. I know that the student nurses from my uni work weekends because I have seen them in my area making house calls with their mentors, hope this helps.

does anyone know about mental health placements? iv been told on placements its mainly 9-5, it dont bother me just like to know!also do we get help the transport costs? like getting a bus pass?

Reply 14

not too sure about mental health placements i guess it depends where you are, some of them are like day centres, and a lot of the MH students i know say it's not very 'hands on'.

and as for travel expenses, if you've got a bursary you can claim back your travel expenses from the NHS student grants unit, but that's only if you travel 3 or more miles to either get into uni or to get to placement. (that's for public transport anyway, i think it's different for cars, but i dunno)

i am at nottingham doing my nursing and i am ni everyday of the week except weekends. during the frist semester monday tuesday thursday and friday we were in 9-4 and then wednesday we were in just in the morning then in the 2nd semester the days the modules were on so now i am in monday to thursday 9-4 and then just friday mornings.

regarding the placements we are excpected to do 1 in 4 weekends, and with regards to mental health i know the ppl on my course doing mental health have been placed on wards so they are doing early and late shifts just like everyone else!

Student Nurses need to experience the whole continuum of of practice and this includes working at weekends - however you shouldn't be being used to prop up staffing and your weekends should be less in number than than those of substantive staff - if you are beign asked to do more than 1 in 3 it;s probably excessive

for an example where i work ( Reasonably busy Emergency Dept) - we say 'average' weekend working is 1 in 2 for short shifts and 3 long shifts / 4 weeks

hopefully your Uni will have guidance - but if there's not i'd suggest 1 in2 is excessive for a student and 1in 3 and a bit ( e.g. 2-3 weekends in 8 weeks of placement) is a good target

weekends are always a bone of contention i've noticed. i've heard loads of different things,

like one person told me that one weekend day (either Sat or Sun) counts as a weekend, so you could do 4 Saturdays like, and that would be it unless you wanted to do more,
but other people have told me that you have to do Sat and Sun, so that'd be 4 Saturdays and 4 Sundays
on my last placement they had me working 4 out of the 8 weekends on both days, yet on the ward i was on before i did one long day on a Sat for a 9 week placement, but no-one picked up on that.
