Durham is the grave of the Oxbridge rejects

NB No Durhamite is criticising Oxbridge in this thread. There is no need for you to go all superior on us.

I know I know, I was just being slightly caustic because of that bizzarely aggressive response I got earlier.

Also Durham certainly does select on intelligence.

Of course it does; however, my point was that there are other comparable universities, so people which get offers from both choose between them based on student body characteristics.

For 2006 the English, Law and History departments rejected anyone who did not meet the cut off point of 7+ A*s at GCSE and 4+ As at AS Level straight away without any other considerations.

I doubt that's true about but the fact people even believe it is a reflection, for me, of why Oxford's admissions system is infinitely superior to Durham's. If Oxford even suggested the above was true it'd be razed to the ground for being elitist. But it clearly isn't because Oxford has an array of interviews and subject tests which means even if you have poor grades, intelligence can show through. It's just a more powerful system for discovering ability and one of the key reasons why Oxford and Cambridge are able to generate intellectually higher quality student bodies than their competitors.

Fair point. It is a Durham rumour but I think it might be true. But Durham's admissions tutors do have a hard job (no interviews, many more people apply because they think they have a chance) and IMO they cope with the prospect of trawling through thousands of Application forms in the the most pragmatic way.

Anyway I just hope that the conclusion of this rather pointless thread is that Durham does contain quite a few students who were rejected from Oxbridge. IMO what that really shows is that Durham is somewhere at the top of the tier of universities below Oxbridge. All in all, thats not a bad place to be.
I disagree. This thread shows nothing. The second it was posted you could've predicted a bit of inane banter, discussion of rahs, someone getting offended (it was always likely to be someone who hadn't yet come up to Durham) before a few voices of reason prevailed, pointed out the very obvious fact that Durham's an excellent university and left it there.

Sometimes I think they should just recycle TSR threads on a monthly basis - I'm sure threads like this have come up before.
Unpossible
Christ. The next time I say "I'd rather be a leper than a Tab", I really have to prepare for the inevitable Cambridge student clutching league tables and a WHO report, and claiming most vehemently that leprosy is at least marginally worse than Cambridge University.

Well, yes, because I'd take Leprosy over Musicbloke any day...

Ba dum tsh. Joking, really.

Anyway, Isaiah:

Of course threads like this have come up before. But even so posting still wastes time and is currently preferable to work...

. It is the opinion of those less blind individuals that makes Durham the Sunday Times University of the Year 2005(http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,8403-1795844,00.html).:

NB the other shortlisted universities for uni of the year were:

Bath
East Anglia
Hull
Loughborough

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Durham and I know it's a great place, but the university of the year competition has little to do with quality. That article you quoted makes great stock of the fact that Durham students like Durham, and draws some dodgy conclusions:

that article
Durham’s students appear to like their university much more than their peers in other high-achieving institutions. It goes without saying that this is a vindication for the teaching quality, academic support, learning resources, and assessment and feedback offered by academic staff.

University of the year thing is bull****. For most things, we are a University that is not quite up to Oxbridge standards, but as far as I care... our Chemistry and Physics departments, which are the foundation of my Natural Sciences degree are RIGHT up there in the thick of it with both Cambridge and Oxford. So when you are right at the top of the tower, it doesn't matter which room you are in, at least not to me... because all my curtains are drawn anyway.

So no chance of an ocean panoramic:frown:

Platocrates isn't at Oxbridge afaik, he spends most of his time trying to annoy those who are on this forum.
I just say what I feel. If it annoys, then so be it.

Durham and Edinburgh are far more rah than Oxford. All my friend at these universitis, not to mention their facebook photos, confirm this.

Oh, so your friends have said so? Riiiiight...are they representative of the whole student population? Or did they do a survey?

Granted, the Times isn't gospel, but it seems a hell of a lot reliable than a few peoples' opinions, and these statistics would indicate that there are [slightly] more rahs at Oxbridge.

Social class A, B or C1 or a non-state school isn't a definitive marker for "Rah".

The Times would need a whole new pashmina/old-school-tie wearing,appropriate-family-background,hacky-attitude-drinking-society-membership,whatever assessment to quantify rah impression you can get.

Well, isn't that an enlightened statement!? Ha!

As opposed to what, i should ask? You mean to tell us that all the other 'plebeian' universities admit on some other factor?!

The reason that Durham might be viewed as a refuge for Oxbridge rejects is that, for those who do not make it into the institution that is Oxbridge, Durham offers an alternative-a place with a remarkable reputation, excellent teaching standards but with less pressure. Indeed, for some subjects and in many people's opinions (and no, not just the aforementioned rejects!), Durham even ranks above Oxbridge. It is the opinion of those less blind individuals that makes Durham the Sunday Times University of the Year 2005(http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,8403-1795844,00.html).

.................

Hehe, what sad passion!
Admit it. Durham sucks.
