Durham is the grave of the Oxbridge rejects

To be fair, plenty of people I met at the open day were applying because 'it's like Oxbridge'.

Is that a bad reason?

Depends what you call a bad reason. Some people have said that it's absurd to think of Durham as full of 'Oxbridge rejects' because all top universities are. I was pointing out that I had met people who had applied to Durham specifically because it is more like Oxbridge in certain ways than anywhere else.

Fair enough - I wasn't trying to catch you out, just wasn't sure what your main point was, as your post was quite succint. To me, it seems obvious that Durham attracts Oxbridge rejects, but its worth remembering that these rejects are often better qualified than many successful Oxbridge applicants. Therefore, I'm not sure why being branded as full of Oxbridge rejects is taken so negatively, as it surely makes them better than everywhere else where Oxbridge rejects don't want to go.

If you're going to Durham, I think Josephine Butler College is *THE* place to go; considering it's brand new, and you can still enjoy the whole rustic and charming environment not too far away. There'll surely be alot of opportunities for leadership and development though, especially since 2006 will be their first intake. Anyway, back to the topic.

I think it's because of the collegiate nature of Durham. There aren't many places that you can get that sense of belonging.

I go to Durham and I am very much alive...

I respect Cambridge and Oxford students for the pressure they endure and the important work they will one day do, and I think we Durham students feel that respect is mutual. We do not see ourselves as the zombied counterparts... because my life didn't end when I went to Durham, in many ways it began.

And I love it there... whether I had ambitions of going to Oxbridge or not.

I respect Durham students. Durham was my insurance and I would have been very happy to go there. I even thought for most of my first year (until I started to like Ox) that I would have been happier at Durham. The ancient kingdom of Northumbria had centres of monastic learning a long time before Oxford and Cambridge existed. I loved the cathedral when I visited too.
