Electrical and electronic or Electrical and software engineering?

Hi, I want to work in the oil and gas industry as an engineer and was wondering which course was better for me. As Glasgow University do both a Electrical and electronic engineering course and also an Electrical and software engineering course but I am unsure which would benefit more for finding employment ? Thanks

How handy are you with a computer? Have you ever tried programming before?

I'm comfortable using Visual Basic and have used Java in the past but are not by any means an expert.

Shouldn't you then pursue petroleum engineering? What are you going to do on the oil platform with programming? I was on one about three years ago. There were a lot of smart engineers, but I saw no programmers...maybe times changed.
A lot more electrical engineers in the oil industry than petroleum. Petroleum is quite a niche area whereas electrical engineers can apply their skills to just about everything in the industry.
