Hi, this may be a silly question, but I ended up getting the wrong answer in a past paper.
The question is to give the systematic name for Li2S. Now, I put dilithium sulfide because like N2O is dinitrogen monoxide.
The answer says lithium sulfide. Is this because their valencies would cancel out?

Your logic is fine, it's just that ionic compounds are not named like that.

Where the metal part of the ionic compound does not have a variable oxidation state then there is no need to state it. This applies to groups 1&2 and aluminium, but not to the transition elements or 'p' block metals.

The correct name for dinitrogen monoxide is actually nitrogen(I) oxide, showing the oxidation state on the nitrogen.
