Does watching a lot of porn make you gay? (possibly) Watch

I'm revising for psychology and learning about associative learning. The famous example would be Pavlovs dogs, where a ringing of a bell is repeatedly presented with food for hungry dogs. The automatic response to the food is to salivate, but after repeated pairing of the food and bell, the dogs begin to associate the ringing of the bell with food and can salivate only to the sound of the bell.

Would the same principles apply to people who watch a lot of porn? Say, the naked male is the ringing of the bell, the female is the food and the horny teenage boy is the hungry dog. Would the boy start to associate the male body with feelings of arousal? Or do you think sexual attraction is too powerful and innate to be swayed by associative conditioning?

I mean that's how fetishes start isn't it?

btw, I use the word gay in very loose terms.

I find that when you watch porn, eventually you need something more freakier, more shocking for you to get off on, because watching one guy plow one girl, just won't be enough anymore.

Then you venture to dark side of porn. Maybe it's DP, maybe it's gangbang, maybe it's even TS, what ever the case, you've broken the 1 penis rule.

I get where you're coming from and it does make sense... but I think there would be a difference between associating a man's body with sexual gratification, and actually being sexually attracted to the body itself. In the same way Pavlov's dog didn't find the bell delicious, it just reminded him of something he did, you wouldn't actually be bisexual just because of the association.

Like tibbles has said, even if your hypothesis was correct (and I don't think it is), you wouldn't be gay/bi, as you're not actually attracted to the man.
"Pavlov's dog didn't find the bell delicious" an excellent way of putting it.

Psychologists say that the reason straight men are likely to find DP/gangbanging hotter than 1-1 porn, is that we are aroused more when there's competition (the multiple men being the competition).

Hmm interesting. I don't really like that porn myself, it's just too much going on for me, looks painful too, even though I know it's not.

1 on 1 just makes it easier for me to imagine it's me doing the girl.

When I thought I was straight, I watched a lot of DP, as I thought it was really hot.

Now that I've realised I'm gay, however, I'm the same as you - it's a lot easier to imagine myself having sex with the guy if it's just 1 on 1, so that's what I watch.

Ah yes you're right. I guess the bells didn't make the dog hungry but they in some way prepared them for eating through salivation. However, there was still some physiological reaction to the bells, do you not think there'd be any reaction at all to the male?

    Describe gay sex
"I imagine myself having sex with the guy" is hardly describing gay sex...

Since you're interested, though, it's so wonderful when the man I'm sleeping with puts his penis in my anus. When he cums inside me, the semen runs down my bum and he can lick it all up.

Stop being so sensitive. If you don't like gay men and don't want to think about the disgusting notion of two men sleeping together, then feel free to not read posts made by gay guys in porn threads.

I don't think this is the case, I watch lesbian porn sometimes, but usually straight porn, surely if your theory was correct I wouldn't be aroused whilst watching lesbian porn.

I think that sexuality is likely to at least in part have a significant biological basis (to suggest that sexuality is purely psychological is to suggest that individuals have a degree of control over or can 'learn' to be heterosexual/homosexual/etc, all the evidence to date suggests that this is not the case) and as such I don't think that basic classical conditioning could have any significant effect. Furthermore human beings have a 'cognitive override', we are in theory capable of mentally separating the site of a naked guy with the pleasure associated with masturbation.

That's different. Where does the appetite (sexual or normal) come in to that? There's a difference between watching something you enjoy and watching something which gives you a physical reward.

Good point, by isn't fear both a biological and psychological response? And strong fear responses can be induced through conditioning.

Obviously, watching too much porn doesn't make you gay but I'm just wondering why, say we can be conditioned to feel sexual attracted to a pair of leather boots (there was a good paper for this which my lecturer gave us but I can't find it!) and yet it doesn't seem to work when the stimulus is a person. Maybe it's because bells and boots are fairly neutral, uncomplex stimulus for a response to be paired with. A human however, is very complex, and induces many feelings, it is not at all neutral to us. So maybe it's a lot harder to create an association.

And what you said about cognitive override is interesting, and sounds plausible.
