Does anyone know specifically how much and what we need to know for the influential artists?

The lists on the edexcel website had:

    Bill Haley and his comets
    Buddy Holly
    Little Richard
    Chuck Berry
    Jerry Lee Lewis
    Eddie Cochran
    Elvis Presley
    Gene Vincent

    Grandmaster Flash
    Public Enemy
    Puff Daddy
    Run DMC
    Snoop Dog
    Sugarhill Gang

But there may be other ones worth knowing about however less likely to be in the exam, the one's I've looked at are Bo Diddley, Cliff Richard, Roy Orbison, Duane Eddy, Carl Perkins, The Everly Brothers for rock and roll and DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, MC Hammer, Coolio for Hip Hop.

You don't need to know in that much detail as it's likely to be 3-4 mark questions on a maximum of 2 from each genre so aim to know about 5 facts about them each roughly (so like their style of music, maybe how they began, when they were popular, distinguishing characteristics of their music) and then one or 2 tracks for each.
Focus on the ones on the list first.

You might also get questions more generally about the evolution of the genre or the technology behind it (slap back delay for rock and roll, maybe synthesis and sampling for hip hop)
