I have a ticket from Manchester to Ely, and it instructs me to use the tube to go from London Euston to King's Cross, which I see as a waste of time as I know they're so close, but would I be able to walk? Or are there ticket barriers before the ones to the platforms? I can't remember.

It's 10-15 minutes walk. If it's sunny, walk. If it's raining, take the tube.
There are entry/exit barriers for the overground system and for the underground - they won't affect your decision.

The tube system for the most part has its own lot of ticket barriers which don't correspond with those at National Rail stations.

Getting off the train at Euston there will be no barrier, getting on and off the tube there will be, and there may or may not be a barrier switched on for the mainline platforms at King's Cross. In conclusion, might as well walk.

But there is a direct train from Manchester to Ely - why go via London?

There's a really quick way, you just walk straight at the wall between platforms 9 and 10.
