    I was taught to memorise that n*lamda=d*sin(theta)
    But I come to a problem when the equation x=lamda*D/a has different letters, what does d represent? The distance between neighbouring maxima (which is x in the second equation) or the separation between the slits (which is a in the second equation).
    I memorised it as df=lamda*D/ds instead btw.

    Nevermind d is a

    lamda= wavelength
    x= fringe spacing
    a= slit separation
    d= distance between screens

    the second equation is for double slits not a diffraction grating and it relies on small angle approximations
