I'm coming to the end of my first year in university and wondering whether it was possible to switch courses, or am i just too late now

Youmay be able to switch courses if you want to do so within the same university, depending on their rules and procedures of course.
But if you are wanting to changes courses between universities it may be too late to do that now, as you would need to re-apply through UCAS for the new course, and since the UCAS deadline for 2013 entry is long gone, the likeliness of you getting a place is rather small. You could enquire into this through your careers advisor/personal tutor and see if there is any possibility at all in doing this at the point in time, and if there is a possibility, what timeframe/process you would need to go through in order to make it happen.
You could always drop out, take a gap year, and during your gap apply again for the new course, if you so believe that the new course is right for you. No point sticking with a course/university for the sake of it if you don't like it.

Yes, it is possible as long as the course your aiming to get onto isn't too different from the one you're doing because you will have to have covered the same content as those already doing the course at other university.
