Catholic school calls in Stonewall after boy calls pupil's shoes 'gay'

A Roman Catholic school called in a gay rights group to give staff lessons in how to stop homophobic bullying after claims a five-year-old boy called another pupil’s shoes "gay"

Stonewall resources for primary schools are based around a pack called "Different Families, Same Love", which teaches the message that same-sex couple households are equal to those founded on marriage between heterosexuals.

Children are taught not to use the word "gay" derisively, even if they say it to mean "bad" or "rubbish", because it would upset children who might be gay or might have gay parents.

But the decision to allow Stonewall into a Catholic primary has surprised family campaigners who believe that the gay rights group should not be allowed to impose its views on young children.

They claimed that such incidents were being used as a device for the group to enter schools to teach "gay propaganda".

Antonia Tully, national coordinator of the Safe at School campaign, said that the presence of gay activists in primary schools may alarm parents. "Many parents will be very concerned that a gay rights organisation is considered to be an appropriate source of advice on how to deal with children using inappropriate language in the playground. If a primary school takes on Stonewall's agenda, young children will be exposed to homosexual issues which they are too young to understand properly. Parents expect a school to provide an education, not subject their children to gay propaganda."

I can see both sides of the story, but having read the actual article it sounds a bit like it's been overblown. There wasn't any suggestion that the 'Stonewall pack' mentioned had actually been used - Stonewall had only come in to train the teachers in how to teach children about different sexualities. Presumably the school would be quite within their rights to pick and choose what they actually want to say to their pupils. In addition, the article says that the training went ahead with the full consent of all bar one of the governors, and the approval of the local archdiocese.

It's also worth noting that a lot of 'Roman Catholic' schools aren't made up of exclusively Catholic kids any more, so it may not be as controversial as it appears - for example one of the Catholic schools in my hometown actually has a lot of Muslim and Sikh kids in it, simply because it's closer to where they live.

An incident made school management aware of the issue of homophobia, as a result school management invited an organisation which does a lot of work on this issue to train teachers in how to deal with it.

    The objection to this is..?

you're advocating the indoctrination of five year olds with homosexual propaganda because one of them used a word as a slur which they don't understand can have multiple, more adult meanings. just think about that for a moment.

they patently are not hating on "gays" because they don't know what sexual perversion is at that age.
it is sickening to the core that teachers at the school can be so politically correct that they will pander to a lobby group like stonewall which opportunistically seizes any such situation to spread its filth.

if homos don't like the hijacking of the word "gay" as a byword for something that is unpleasant, they should consider how older adults feel who once used it to refer to a lively carefree innocence.

Homosexual propaganda? "Gay people exist and have a right to," is such an unreasonable thing to teach. And what "more adult" meanings?

Yes, a child used the word "gay" as a slur, most likely without homophobic intent. Nonetheless, this raises a question about the use of homophobic slurs. It seems entirely responsible to equip teachers to tackle this and all the many associated issues. This has nothing to do with sex, perverse or otherwise.

This again comes down to a minority group being far to over sensitive to any issue. It clearly wasn't meant as offensive to homosexual people. Jesus Christ. No wonder our world is up the ****ter when petty stories like this make headlines.

This is just one of those articles that makes you want to bang your head against something hard. Gay propaganda? Does anyone really believe that anyone who uses terms like these really knows what's best for children?

Interestingly enough, it seems to have been part of an Ofsted recommendation about bullying and not in response to any particular incident.

Watch that episode of South Park about bikers.

The word "gay" existed before it meant homosexual, this is just a evolution of it though it may have begun as a homophobic slur.

I know gay guys who call things gay and if anything laugh if someone calls it.

I have a bi friend who calls things gay all the time.

Lol this is hyped up and people are being too sensitive. The context in which the word 'gay' was used in a funny, childish manner, without the intentions to offend gays.

in a school right now, the word 'gay' really probably doesnt mean homosexual. shoes cant be homosexual, lessons cant be homosexual. Its just a word schoolkids use these days.

The objection is that there is no one to be mad at. This in itself is outrageous.
