    Hi,
I've been on JSA for 3 months now (with a break of 1 month) and on Housing benefit since 2 weeks.

I've just got accepted for a graduate job starting mid-June, so I'll have to cancel my JSA and contact the Council regarding the housing benefit.

It says on the council website that you could still get housing benefits even if you've got a job but the 2 conditions are:

1-Savings less than £6K, which is clearly the case, I've got none

    2-A low income.

So my question is, how do they determine a low income? it's very vague and London rents are insane, so I won't be able to pay my current rent on my own. That's why I need to see if I can get help.

    Thanks for any info guys!

It depends how much your local housing allowance is and how much your applicable amount (basically, JSA + £5 a week) is.

Hi, hope I can be of some help. I am currently on a low income (around £400 a month) and receiving housing benefit. After I graduated and before I got my job I was on JSA and receiving full housing benefit. I had to take my first two months payslips into the council in order for them to see what my earnings where. Each council sets it's own local housing allowance which is what they think is a fair amount for rent for a certain number of bedrooms in the area. They use this allowance and take into consideration your earnings to decide how much you will be entitled to. (How they actually work this out I don't know). The local housing allowance will be more in London than where I live though. I currently get £88 every 4 weeks in housing benefit whilst earning what I do each month. Your local council website should have an online benefit calculator you can use which will enable you to see what you may be entitled to.
