Will handwriting cost you any marks in an official exam? The instructions say crops your mistakes with a single line. What if you forget and erase mistakes with many 'ugly' lines, making your paper a mess?

I did this for my GCSEs and AS maths, my handwriting when I'm rushing is pretty poor, I don't think you'll drop marks for presentation unless they literally can't read it

You don't lose marks for poor handwriting. You will definitely lose marks for illegible handwriting, because the examiner won't be able to read what you've written. You'll have to practice to strike a balance between writing fast enough to finish the paper and get all of your points across and neat enough so that someone can read it.

For essay based papers, I would write large and skip lines if you need to. For quantitative subjects, make sure you write out your variables neatly - this will help you not to get confused and avoid errors, as well as making it easier to mark.
