When do you start applying for University?

If you're applying for 2014 September, when do you send your application off?

If your applying to Oxbridge or for medicine, dentistry or vet. medicine then your application needs to be submitted by the 15th of October 2013. Most colleges would want you to send it off a week beforehand or so, so that any delays don't result in a late application.

If you're applying for other universities and courses the deadline is the 15th January 2014. Again, most colleges would let you send it off well in advance (I sent mine around the 20th of October 2012 and had my first offer 2 weeks later)

Some art and design courses will be later in terms of deadlines - the 24th March 2014.

Dont panic and think you have to get your application in as soon as UCAS 'opens' the new cycle in October. Aside from the exceptions of Oxbridge and Medicine, you have until mid-Jan 2014 to finalise your initial application. Applying in October gives you NO advantage over someone applying in January.

Take time to slowly and calmly read Uni prospectuses/websites, go to Open Days and think carefully about what you might study and where. Remember, you don't have to go to Uni straight from school - there is no shame in taking a Gap Year if you arent sure about your choices yet. And you dont have to go to Uni to have a happy and fulfilled life - see www.notgoingtouni.com for lots of interesting alternatives.
