S1 OCR Line of Regression

Can someone explain to me when to use x on y as opposed to y on x?

Thanks.
This depends on which is understood (based on the context of the problem) to be the dependent variable (with the other being interpreted as the independent variable).

If y is the dependent variable ( and x the independent variable), then the regression line of y on x is relevant.

If x is the dependent variable ( and y the independent variable), then the regression line of x on y is relevant.

Hope this clarifies, Peace.
