The Student Room Group

18 Years Old, Holiday with Boyfriend

I'd like to go on holiday with my boyfriend, but I've encountered problems such as hotels saying we are too young to have a room unsupervised... Anyone else had these problems? Can we get around them? We'll actually probably be going next Easter or July, to Egypt or Italy or Greece, so we'll be 19, but some hotels said we needed to be 21.

Also, I've been on holidays lots before, but only with adults, a little scared of going on my own. Can anyone else share their experience of you and your partner or a group of friends on holiday alone?

Thanks

me and my bf went to london.. not quite the same, but still. we are 19 and 17 and there weren't any problems.. seems a bit stupid to have an age limit.

it's also much fun not giong with adults. you are free!
try club 19-30 holidays they cater for that age group no problem. Plus i went to jersey and their age limit for rooms were, at least one person had to be 18. Or try your travel agent, they will know somewhere.
Spain are quite relaxed on room limits a group of my mates went and they were 17 and 18 year olds no parents

what about renting an appartment or similar?

I'm going to France in july with 4 friends and my boyfriend, we're all aged between 17 and 19, and there are 2 couples going. We actually found it cheaper to book all our own flights and get an appartment for the week than to go in a hotel, it was easy to do. The only problem we had is that the person we're renting it from asked us for double the security deposit because we're under 21, my mum had to vouch for us and say we're responsible, mature and aren't going to cause trouble etc but that was it.

or, when contacting the hotels you don't have to tell them your age I don't think. After all, they wouldn't ask a 30 year old their age so unless you tell them how old you are I don't think they'd ask, as its rude. Have people asked you or did you just give your age? You're fine having rooms in the UK at 18, and younger than that, like Pumpkin7 said. I've stayed in hotels all over the country with my boyfriend for various things, the most we've had is a few "tut, tuts" from old people.

Travelling on your own or with friends is straight forward enough, make sure you know important things like addresses, flight times etc before you go, and you'll be fine. I usually end up being the 'leader' of the group as I'm the only one who is bothered to sort out the practicalities, as long as you know what you're doing and keep your wits about you its basically the same as being in the UK, you just have to do the thinking instead of having parents etc to think for you.

I've never been anywhere just with friends etc and encountered problems with needing to be over 21... where were you looking?

I went to Barcelona with my boyfriend last year, I was 16, nearly 17 and he was 19.

It is a daunting experience, there's a lot that COULD go wrong but probably won't. I'd recommend doing a bit of research into the area you're going to first, make sure someone knows the details of your holiday, hotel address etc.

We had a fantastic time as I'm sure you will do
Some places are a little unkeen on groups where most or all are 18/19...they think you're gonna be really noisy and disruptive!! I found a place in Newquay which do club 18-30 hols...Actually there seem to be a couple:

Cool, well, if we go to Italy or Egypt, I'll have been there before, so won't be so bad
Dont worry about it, it's totally not scary at all! Its so much more fun actually! I never had any problems with being under 18 the first time I went on holiday with a boyfriend which was when I was 17. Or ever since, I am now 20 and still havent had that problem, and been on many holidays...boyfriend now is the same age as me, and have never been told we have to be over 21.

But really, youll be fine, i dont really remember being scared at all, just really excited about going on holiday!
The only problem we encountered mostly has been not being able to rent any kind of car, which was not really a problem on any Greek Islands i went to cos they are so small anyway, but we went to Cyprus last and really could have done with the transport (but dont go there i didnt really like it lol, too English - but Greece is fantastic!)
Just make sure you know what you are doing and not to get into any bad situations and youll be fine.

I went on holiday with my boyfriend when I was 18 and he was 17... I loved the fact that I was classed as his "supervisor" haha. Also we went to Ibiza... You're typical 18-30 holiday, but I've never heard of the whole over 21 thing? I went to New York last year with my brother, I was 20 and he was 18 and we didn't have any problem? I think we went through Thompson for that... I was a bit scared beforehand, but once you get there, it's cool.

That's because back home although you're an adult at 18, you're not really an adult till your 21.

Yeah, they found one eventually, but couldn't book online, had to phone direct and tell them.

Strangely, just booked a holiday for a friend and I in August and had no trouble, didn't even ask for DOBs!
You will LOVE New York! Is it your first time there?

Yes. We're planning on doing lots of things. I bought good seats to see Monty Python's Spamalot  and planning on doing lots of museums, etc etc. Anything you can recommend? Except shopping.

Some places won't allow under 21's to book places.

Uhm, well I went mostly for the shoping haha... But uhm, we got cornered in the street by people selling bus tours and we ended up buying a package that included being able to visit all the different borough's... But we didn't go out of Manhattan, so we kinda wasted money with the package we bought. I think it depends how long you're going for, cos we spent most of our time exploring Soho and Grenwich village. Go to Blecker St and there's a place called *I think* John's Pizzeria which has delicious pizzas. But I do wish we'd have gone to the Bronx Zoo... Also, with the bus packages, it doesn't actually include entrance to the Statue of Liberty... Just the bloody ferry ride there, which was a major disappointment, and they didn't tell us that when we bought tickets grr. DEFINITELY go to Broadway, and if you go to Times Square you can buy your tickets cheaper than in the hotels etc... Go the Empire State building as early as possible to avoid all the waiting around.
I've been to Barcelona (it was my 18th birthday present from him!) with my boyfriend, and also to Amsterdam. We're going to Rome in July too. Both times we've had the BEST time ever! It's absolutely brilliant being in a completely new place without having to worry about anybody else but you two. I think you'll absolutely love it.

I've only come across the being over 21 thing very rarely- i wonder if it's a bigger problem because you're going to America? Things like mini bars in rooms etc might mean you have to be over 21.

I could not recommend www.hotelconnect.co.uk enough- they have brilliant special offers where you can get nights at certain hotels free. We stayed in a 4* hotel for 3 nights in Amsterdam (with flights) for £191 each. And we're paying £170 each for 5 nights in a 4* hotel in Rome. Also, check out your hotel to see if it's dodgy on www.tripadvisor.com- so many times i have been about to book a hotel, and then checked it on that site and it tells you how awful the hotel is! Make sure you read up on the place you're going first!
