First Year pass marks

Was wondering what you need to get to pass your core subject and to be able to take it to honours level in first and second year? Thanks

It varies from course to course and degree programme to degree programme. The pass mark in Edinburgh is 40, and it tends to vary as to whether you have to pass all course components with a 40, or just secure an average of 40. To progress to honours officially only requires 40 in some cases, but a lot of subjects will demand 50 (and sometimes higher, especially if you're spending 3rd year on exchange). Really does vary - it's something you can check in your degree handbook.

Do you know what it is for English Literature? Have looked at the handbook and can't see anything about it.

Regarding the first year degree exam: "Please note that students are REQUIRED to pass the Degree Examination in order to pass the course."

From which we can infer that it is not necessary to pass all coursework elements provided an average of 40 is achieved with a pass in the exam.

For entry to third year: "For admission to honours, an overall mark of at least 50% at the first attempt is required. Only an overall mark of 50% or very close to it will guarantee entry to English or Scottish Literature 3. Students must also gain a pass in the degree exams."

Same deal as before - although it's fairly difficult to fail coursework and still achieve a 50.
