Panicking, freaking out, and so, so scared

Three-hour exam on Monday (two Human Biology exams at an hour and a half each, one after the other) and I'm freaking out majorly about it. I'm so tired and so exhausted after thinking about it too much and revising and worrying about it and I've cried so many times today (I've not cried for ages, and today it's all just come pouring out).

I've tried practice exam papers and they're what's freaking me out the most - I'm getting extremely low marks on them (using the mark schemes and grade boundaries to determine this) and it's not good enough and it's making me feel worse and unmotivated, etc. All that's going through my head is "ohGodohGodohGodohGodohGodIcan'tdothis!!!" and I'm panicking and just freaking out and...ARGH!

I'm scared about the exam, I'm scared about getting there and just running, I'm scared about the results if I don't run, I'm scared about the consequences if I do...everyone's been telling me not to panic and today it's just all come to a head and I'm such a wreck and I just...I don't know what to do. I don't know if I can do this.

I don't know how to calm down or how to stop panicking. I haven't had a panic attack in ages and I don't want one now, of all times!

First of all. Breathe, calm down and RELAX. The one thing that IS going to affect your performance is your attitude and confidence levels. Granted, no one is going to go in with a big grin on their faces, but try and avoid going in with an idea of what you're going to come out with, e.g a pass, or fail, etc.

You must remember reivising TOO MUCH is not advised, since stress levels increase, therefore your concentration levels will deteriorate fast. So, relax. Have a bath or shower, or put on your favourite music or TV show and have a good laugh or watch some funny TV.

If you've done the work, regardless of what your past papers are telling you, it does not matter. You will be fine. Panicking and stressing will make the experience a negative one - try to turn this into a positive one, like a learning experience, or the start of a new attitude towards examinations.

P.S Don't be going over your notes five minutes prior to the exam or taking in new information. If you feel a panic attack coming on, get someone to calm you down or breathe slowly and count back from 100.

im in the same situation, 3 hour biology exam on monday and panicking! but the best thing to do is calm down (i know easier said than done!) take a half an hour break, and just relax, which is what i'm doing, you may feel guilty, but you're going to get no-where if your mind is clouded with worry. Don't forget practice papers are just that, practices, and in exams you get that adrenaline rush which kick starts you so i'm sure you'll remember everything you need to, don't exhaust yourself before it though! keep reading your notes, and everything will be fine, at the end of the day the worst that can happen is you aren't happy with your grade and you resit, and in the grand scheme of things thats not a big problem. hope that helps

I think I feel guilty though, being on the computer or watching TV when I should be revising or whatever. I'm only on here now because I'm not taking anything in (because of the panic attack, etc.) and because I needed help .

There's just so much riding on this. I've already put university back a year, so I'm hoping to go in 2007. If I don't do well in these two exams at all I have to spend another year here (as I don't think I can take both in January, and they won't let us fast-track). I want to go into Occupational Therapy and if I can't do Human Biology, what's the point?

Thanks for your help . I'm trying to breathe . Might run a bath in a minute to calm me down.

I had a 3hr tech. drawing exam in the morning, and a 2.5hr bio exam in the afternoon.

That was a good day.

Don't stress, you'll be surprised how much you can actually remember on the day.

I was like that in chemistry revising this year, no matter what I did my marks in the past papers were generally low. But in the exam it was amazing. Have faith.

Oh big freaking deal! I have the same exam on Monday then on Wedneday I have three chemistry exams and two history exams. You have it easy!

As lots of people have said, just try and keep calm in the days leading up to your exam. I'm freaking out about my exams next week, and as a consequence I can't concentrate and nothing seems to be going in. I've been advised to do an alternative plan, so that if I sit down to work and am getting nowhere, I turn to plan B, which could be something as daft as going to buy a nice pair of socks, just so I'm not sat in my room on my own crying and stressing. Obviously it's better to be working, but if working makes you so wound up, staying calm is priority. And also you have to get past the guilt of not spending every waking hour revising- you do need relaxation time!

The boundaries are misleading: FACT.

YOU DO NOT NEED 80 PERCENT FOR A GRADE A

It is less. Someone on 70% will likely be scaled up to a safe A on UMS (at least I have been on some of my exams)

If you are one grade down on a mock, fear not =)

And I agree with the first reply: attitude counts for a lot.

Same situation, human bio three papers monday, shouldnt b online but heck, i've had ENOUGH of looking at my notes in desperation. i've already sat for my A levels, thought it was over in November, but here goes again... i can tell u that taking those A levels was the most trying time of my life, the day of my BMAT, i had two physics n one math paper, i was so fed up at the end of it i didnt do anything for the rest of the exam session, it lasted 6 horrible weeks in all, i just ATE chocolate a lot of the time. i was getting terrible marks in all past papers but the results were better than any of my dreams

all i can say is that the nite b4, u wont achieve much, its just a matter of relaxing, n certainly not trying to cram everything one last time, maybe a look thru the past papers n the sections of the modules we DO NOT kno at all, but thats the max. sleep well, eat sth u like in the morning.

hope the papers will b ok coz i cant afford a resit, i HAVE TO get my grade, n self studying isnt exactly my thing....... :frown:

I have a 3 hour biology exam on monday too, i've been ill all week so only started properly revsing yesterday. So i understand how you feel. Plus i have maths on tuesday and chemistry on wednesday and haven't revised at all for either . Here's what i keep playing over and over in my head:
- Learn all the key facts, you probably know most of them already, so just go over the main points as they are most likely to test you on that and there's not going to be many questions on the detailed areas.
- Make full use of the time you have left to do revision and try not to panic.
- Be confident. You know more than you think, don't doubt yourself. Sometimes when you look at a wierd question and panic you cease to see that it's actually testing you on some very basic knowledge that you know already.
Hope that helps.
