As bad as people say?

No point, just making a statement. Wollaton isn't very safe either. Its comparatively safer than Lenton or Radford but the safest option, living in flats.

It's about as safe as you'll get in Notts . Not that I want to contribute to any scaremongering - really, even though I've been bashing Lenton, it's not /that/ bad. Just don't do what we did and get frightened into signing for a house without properly looking it over. Ensure security - window locks, good quality door locks and alarms, and be religious about using them and you'll be fine. Make sure you get in with the neighbours (ones who live there permenantly), and they'll look out for you in the holidays when you're at home. Listen to what the SU and everyone says and don't rush into signing for a house in January (or even December as some people I know did). There really really is plenty to go around, and there are nice houses with nice landlords who will look after you. All you have to do is persevere, and not accept something that isn't right.

I've done it loads, never been mugged. Mind you I am 6'4", maybe that puts muggers off?

Ive walked home from work and from Rock City several times late at night to lenton. Im 4ft 5 small blonde girl  Maybe im just lucky.

On a more serious note lol, my car has been the unlucky one for crime in nottingham. It was broken into October last year, had my sat nav nicked out of the glovebox (own fault, but still) and the window broken, overall payout £420, Back wiper blade and full arm ripped off June this year by some vandal guessing a drunk one at that, payout £98. Window broken into attempted robbery this month! (I learnt from last time not to leave anything ) payout £60 for window. Its been an expensive year. Little crimes, but ****ing annoying. Piece of advice for drivers, you have a nice car? dont park on shakespeare villas, EVEN if your desperate for a space, if you cant find any free bays elsewhere park at the glasshouse its £2 for overnight parking and its secure.

I just want to know from people who are already at any off the notts unis how safe is the city? is there a really high crime rate or is notts just got a bad rep from the press? do alot of people get mugged and flats broken into?

thanks in advance

I'm not at uni here, but I've lived here for 17 years (yay :frown: ). Honestly - there's no problem as long as you're not silly! (Wandering down dark alleys in the middle of the night in St Ann's with a t-shirt saying 'Shoot me' for example.) So be careful, but you don't have to be paranoid!

I've done it loads, never been mugged. Mind you I am 6'4", maybe that puts muggers off? I do know someone who got attacked with a taser underneath the Sherwin Road railway bridge (the one that joins onto the corner of Lenton Boulevard and Castle Boulevard) aka Rape Alley

A friend of a friend (isn't it always that way?) was mugged at taser-point on Derby Rd and I've had a crappy attempt at being mugged down by that dodgy alley and I'm 6'4" as well! I think most students know one or two people who've had a problem or two. There's no denying there is a criminal element in Nottingham, but as long as you keep your wits about you and try not to walk around alone at night (as I was) you should be okay.

The key for me was getting out of Lenton. Proper ****hole, got burgled three times in a few months, escaping to Wollaton was the best move I could have made! It's great here <3

Yes, Lenton is a ****hole, it's certainly not Chelsea!!! but, if you're a student at Nottingham it's the place to be. Wollaton is nice but it's too suburban for me. I already live suburb when I'm at my parent's house and don't want to live in a suburb at uni. Lenton is literally the student village of Nottingham, there are streets which only contain students. I love it.
