Do universities frown upon retakes?
Even if they are to get B's to A*s and A's to A*s?

In short no. most universities are pretty lenient on retakes, but can I ask what subject you are looking at and where you want to go?
I ask this because most universities do not take into account GCSEs and if they do, all the require is Bs in maths, English and science (depending on the course), and from what you said I assume you already have?
In my case I am retaking some A-Levels to get into my civil engineering course, which requires AAA? SO DON'T PANIC!!!
