Going on the pill - dianette or yasmin?

I'm going to the doctors later today and I'm going to ask to go on the pill for both contraception and to (hopefully) make my skin better. I've heard that dianette is the most common pill to help acne, but I've also heard bad things about it from other people. I've heard that yasmin can help with your skin; does anyone know who true that is? Is it as good as dianette? I know that it's the most expensive pill so I probably won't be put on it anyway straight away, I just want to know a bit more about it. I've heard that you don't put on weight either which is obviously a plus! I will discuss all this with my doctor, but when I've been before (for antibiotics, etc) I've often felt like I havent been listened to and just been fobbed off with the cheapest thing so I want some ideas of what I want before I actually go. Thanks to anyone who can help!

I'm on Yasmin. First I tried Microgynon 30 but I got annoyed that I put on weight, had a tantrum and never took it again

The GP put me on Yasmin as it's meant to help with the weight thing and she was right, I haven't noticed any change since going on it. I don't know how related to the pill it is, but my skin has been really clear since I've been on it, but during this time I have been trying to eat really healthily too which will obviously be a factor.

I think Dianette is probably stronger with regard to controlling acne, but you can't stay on it forever - there's a maximum length of time that you can be on it (I'm not sure how long though, sorry)

i cant speak for yasmin, but i've been on dianette for 4 months and i can see an improvement in my skin. but i've got constant sickness and i've got really bad pain in my calf (sp?) in my right leg which is apparently the start of a blood clot. i'm coming off it as soon as possible. also my doctor said that many people have problems with weight or depression. go google dianette and you'll get some idea of its critisims. i dont think its worth going on to be honest. but really any pill is a bit of a lottery, different pills have very different affects on people- its a matter of trial and error.

I'm on dianette now and have been for about half a year, but I'm going to the doctors tomorrow to change pills. My skin has been a lot clearer but I still get the occasional spots and it's not completely clear. Though I haven't had any huge zits in ages, but that could also be due to other things than the pill. In other words, if you don't have too bad acne the pill isn't going to do that much about it.

I didn't know you could choose what pill you went on?
I'm off to the doctors today to pick up a prescription for my mum, so I might book my appointment then. Do I just tell the receptionist I want to see a doctor about going on the pill?

I don't know how it works in the UK but I'm sure they won't put you on a certain pill if you ask not to be put on it. So in that sense you do have a bit of choice.
And yes, that's the kind of appointment you want.

You don't even have to tell them what the appointment's for - just book in for a regular appointment (I should know, I'm a GP receptionist!).

Nope! Just say I'd like an appointment to see a doctor! The only thing you might have to make clear is if you want a female doctor

I was on Dianette for around a year, and didn't have any problems bar going up a couple of cup sizes! But yeah, i've heard stories about it.

Yasmin has a lower dose of oestrogen, so it'll probably depend on how bad your acne is as to whether they put you on Dianette or not, I'm not sure. I know they don't like you taking it for too long.
I moved to Yasmin a month or so ago, and have had no problems yet! THough I had to run the first two packs together due to going on holiday so I'm not sure what the period is going to be like...

I find that my periods are totally pain free if I take it normally, but if I run two packs together the next period is a bit painful. Nothing horrendous, but I can feel it.

I was put on dianette for my skin years ago and it worked wonders. Came off it after about 4 years (you're only supposed to be on it for 2 years max) and tried various other ones which didn't suit.

Begged my doctor to go back on dianette as it's the only one that suited me and he's let me go back on it for 6 months but got to see him wednesday to see if I can carry on or not.

Know of at least 1 person who's gotten pregnant whilst on Yasmin so wary of it.

Lets face it though, she probably didn't take it properly.

I got Yasmin in the end . I was going to get dianette but she said it's not usually prescribed as a contraception anymore so I asked about Yasmin and she put me on that. So I guess i'll just see what it's like! Lol I feel a sense of achievement at being put on the most expensive pill

Ah, awesome. Same as when I was on Dianette, though the normal ones were still a little painful.

yasmins the most expensive?! woah...I;m on the most expensive one too! I was originally put on marvelon to help my obsenely painfull period cramps (i was literally not able 2 go to school for the first few days, and even after that I'd still be in pain, throwing up the lot!!) Anyway, I switched to yasmin after I got ill, just to make sure it wasn't because of the marvelon, turned out it wasn't, but stuck with yasmin anyway
I generally have pretty clear skin with only occasional break outs (when I get spots though...I never just get 1!!) but I think the breakouts hav generally become a bit more frequent since being on it, but that might just be me becoming a normal 18 year old!!

My girlfriend is on Yasmin and it caused a few problems in the wetness department, so you might need to invest in some KY.

I'm on Dianette and have been for two years.
I went to see my doctor about coming off it because I heard you weren't meant to be on it for too long, but he has kept me on it because I suffer PCOS and this is the pill with the highest oestrogen content, which balances out the extra testosterone brought on by the PCOS. It has made my skin better but hasn't made any difference to my weight - I put on weight just as easily and it's equally as difficult to lose as before I was on Dianette, although that too is probably to do more with the PCOS than anything else.
I would advise the OP to try Dianette, mainly because it is the usual 'starter pill' for people that haven't been on it before. Its effects vary so greatly from person to person that if someone says they really suffered on it, doesn't mean you will too. Try it, and if you suffer, come off it. It's really very simple. There are so many different pills that if you don't like Dianette there are loads of others to try.

Been on Yasmin for 6 months. My skin is ok, but I used to break out a bit on my period, and still do- but not as bad. Also, Ive lost weight! Pains and stuff are almost non-existent whereas before they were excruitiating [sp?]
