Oxbridge is heavy - think about what you're getting into

Which one would you be more likely to befriend?

Clearly the intelligent bastard - allymcb has made this abundantly clear. Other gems of wisdom include "I'd rather be proud and miserable than normal but happy" (not a direct quote, but the meaning is retained). I can see a mid-life crisis in the making.

And ally, I'm afraid I don't talk to people who haven't got a First yet, as they might pollute the pure intellectual rigour of my ivory tower. Let me know when you've earnt the pleasure of my company.

I would rather talk to a fascinating physics genius than some bimbo who was really 'nice'.

I didnt say he was jealous of me personally. His previous comment seemed to be directed at people who judge people and compare themselves favourably to people who went to lesser universities. He seems to be one of those jealous people who achieve little in life and fall back on the argument that if people arent nice about it and pretend everyone is equal and has their own strengths then they are childish.

And yes I am aware that some people dont want to go to oxbridge. Some people are only interested in money grabbing, rather than academic pursuits, and others are too lazy, like the OP.

I have not and am not going to imply that anyone and everyone who went to a Russel Group university is inferior to me personally unless I get a good grade for my degree. I am well aware that a first from durham is better than a third from ox. So please stop implying that I am.

And yes, puppy, I'm sure you are exactly the right person to advise me on what to do to fit in at Oxford, since you were so at home at Cambridge you settled in within days.

edit: the answer to the who would I befriend question is neither. There are plenty of people who I think are nice and are intelligent. No reason to bother with the numpties.

Well I see who does fit in and it won't be you if you keep that attitude up. I have plenty of friends and a very active social life and I don't envy anyone else for either of those things. If you're really so impressed with people with Oxbridge degrees then you should learn to take their advice and criticisms and learn some respect for your elders- I don't take kindly to being talked down to by petulant teenagers.

Don't know what money grabbing has to do with anything- I assumed money grabbing people would go to Oxbridge.

The reason I didn't fit in straight away was because I went to a state comp and there was quite a bit of adjustment required. If I'm not mistaken that's your situation too so perhaps you should listen to me.

Rubbish - absolute tosh. 3 years of hard work to set you up for life. You just didn't get the grades for Oxbridge for undergraduate - don't try and deter others. You jealous ****er

Lol, the contrast between your message and your sig almost makes me want to rep you for that. But in fairness, I think the OP had good intentions, even if we don't agree with him. (I can definitely think of a small number of people at Cambridge who would have been better off somewhere else)

You can't just yell "rubbish" at someones opinion just because you don't agree with it.

(Except when discussing religion)

Money grabbers go to LSE, and stereotypes always work. I do not automatically respect people because they went to Oxbridge. And my main problem with you is that I dont like you, not that I dont respect you. btw 'respect for your elders' is the most ridiculous argument I have ever heard come out of any oxbridgians mouth. I am not going to respect someone just because they managed live 3 years longer.

Yes I did go to a state comprehensive. But quite frankly I think you are just being anti-public school and disliking an environment which I find extremely appealing. No-one at the interviews, open days, or conferences that I met from private school was at all unpleasant (except for the Rugby group schooled guy who ate the bread from the wrong side at dinner leaving me with none  )

None of the people I know at Oxbridge have complained at all about the middle class environment, except for one who is a communist. I dont think I am in the least bit like you, so I dont think your advice will be very useful.

All my friends here went to public school except two. Hello, I do Classics- I can't really be that against public school can I else I wouldn't cope day to day with the people on my course? I'm not anti-public school in the least, I always wanted to go but my parents wouldn't let me and I couldn't afford to send myself. I'd send my kids there infact. I said the stereotypes where true and that public school people got on better at Oxbridge- that doesn't mean I don't spend my spare time with public-schooled counts and heirs having a bloody good time.

My main problem with you is that you're a narrow minded idiot. You have absolutely no reason to dislike me (well you're probably jealous but that aside), so- how you say?- bite me.
Dear allymcb2,

I would appreciate a response from you to some of the points raised/questions asked in my posts.

Thanking you in advance,

Helzerel

If that is true, then why would you find it hard to settle in. Surely the two things are mutually contradictory. And I prefer absolutist to narrow minded, but you say tomayto.

Edit: You are gonna have to post em again helzel I cant find any of your posts

Because it took me a year to settle in?

Last year I hated it, but now I've changed and I love it here.

Was it the naked parties that made the difference? I still can't get over the fact that I haven't been invited to one.

Yes but they usually are competing against other oxonians/tabs in the interviews. And also not everyone gets a first, so they might have to be interviewed against someone with a first from other decent unis.

If you think that, you'll have a shock. Many first class candidates from Oxbridge get turned down for the top jobs, in favour of students from elsewhere. Where you go to university matters a lot, but it matters a lot less than how you perform at assessment centres and what you do at university. Someone with good ECs doing an employable (ie. relatively quantitative) degree from somewhere in the top 20 trounces an Oxbridge student with a first, who spent most of their time working.

At interviews, you're usually competing against people from LSE, UCL, Durham, Warwick, Oxford, Cambridge and a variety of other universities, roughly in that order by number of people (at least looking at 8 or 9 sets of interviews I know about).

There's no doubting Oxbridge is employable, but being good at assessment centres, having good extra curriculars and doing an employable course are far more important. If you think getting a 1st from Oxford will make you walk onto any career, you'll have a huge wake-up call come applications.
