It doesn't exactly boost your grade as much as give you marks already in the bank when you walk into the exam.

If you think of it as another exam where the breakdown for marks is 20% coursework and 40% for the two exams (if you're doing the same exam board i did, others might have more or less exams), then personally it makes more sense.
Just don't worry about the coursework now, concentrate on doing yourself justice in the exam and you won't need your grade boosting, good luck!

how do they mark the papers... do they just add the %..of the papers and c/w??

I don't think so. It is quite a complicated process. I think they basically work out how many marks a candidate has achieved on coursework and on the exam and give these the relevent weightings to produce an overall grade. I don't think they can just add them together because the exam is worth significantly more marks than the coursework. I think they will work out how many marks a candidate has achieved out of the possible 20% and then how many marks out of the possible 80% and use these to give the final grade.
