Oceanography

I've noticed that there are no posts about oceanography which is why I've made this thread. Those who are interested in oceanography and want to become oceanographers please feel free to chat about it. I always loved the ocean since I was little and wished to become a sailor. Later on when I found out about oceanography, I even got more interested. Currently I've finished my A levels and I'm applying for many universities that offer oceanography. Any thoughts or ideas to be shared?

Hi,
I am also considering to take Oceanography after finishing A2s - thinking of Marine Biology with Oceanology. Well, there are only few unis which actually have any oceanography courses... Where did you apply? And what you are planning/dreaming of doing after graduation?

Finally somone is taking oceanography into consideration :yy:. Well im glad to know you're interested too. Actually you will be needing physics chemistry biology and math. I don't know what university you'll be applying for, but most consider mathematics as an obligatory subject. Hopefully I'll be applying to dalhousie university in canada. I'm planning to become a physical oceanographer.. How old are you and which university are you going to attend? Good luck anyway :top:

I just got 17 and currently doing Biology, Chemistry, Geography, and Maths. Out of all UK unis I really liked Bangor University at Oceanography and Marine Biology courses. They (similarly most other unis) require to have any two sciences whether its physics, chemistry or biology; and also maths. If not secret, what are your grades alike? Mine hopefully will be around ABBC for AS, so will need hard work next year. I was also thinking of further study in Canada but not really sure yet and thought it's too late anyway. In terms of future specialisation, I am planning underwater speleology - my geography teacher answered me "What's that?"
I prefer geography since its really damn broad! And I can narrow it down later on

Well, oceanography is for people who enjoy water-based sciences; and hence the name "oceanography"

I too don't know what underwater speleology is :P

Umm don't know how I did for AS but presuming that pretty bad, and worst will be Chemistry - could be even D:frown: For A2 I'll do 3 subjects so dropping chem and hopefully try retake AS Chemistry somehow. I'm not that top-end student and not even top so my aim is to get BBB. Speleology is basically study of caves (say hello to claustrophobics), and for fun, doing it all underwater ahah . How does the uni system in Canada work? I mean going to study abroad:rolleyes:

Well honestly only a few universities in canada accept GCE A level system, with the rest accepting either SAT system or normal high school grades. Luckily the university I'm applying for does consider the A level system and their requirement is either 4 AS levelsor 2 A levels. So I'm quite fortunate to enter this university. Wish me luck :-)

I've got a firm offer for plymouth university In marine biology and oceanography. I completed an extended diploma in applied science and achieved DDD* equivalent to AAA* at a level. But I have not received my maths and English GCSE grade till tomorrow. But I still got accepted. Luckily  if you do geography and a science subject ( usually biology if marine biology was the subject choice but for oceanography a geography subject and science may be okay it all depends in the individual and what shows about that person in application/ personal statement 😋 good luck everybody have fun
