Biomed at Warwick???

Hello,
well basically I'm now at the Open Day stage and have visited quite a few universities but I'm really impressed with Warwick and I feel like I will achieve the AAB for Biomedical Science.
However, I've got very mixed feedback and I keep hearing that although it's a top university it isn't so good for the biological sciences in terms of ranking?
This gets to me because I know I should be aiming high but to be honest I thought Warwick was high enough and I love the university
Thanks

Hi there, when looking at university rankings you have to bear in mind that that tables are based on a variety of data much of which is out of date. For example the national student survey used for this years table is over 12 months old and uses some very subjective values like "added value". Warwick biological Sciences underwent a merger over 2 years ago with research institute which caused a deal of upheaval for all concerned staff and students, leading to a dip in NSS scores. Since then and particularly in the last 12 months things have improved immensely, feedback on time is nearly 100%, nearly 90% of current students have responded to this years NSS to be published in late August, there are 3 times the tutorials compared to 3 years ago, we have a unique computational biology suite with 120 iMACs etc etc. I declare my interest as the outgoing director of admissions but everything list here is 100% backed by fact and if there are any existing Warwick students on the student room, please have your say.

Warwick as a university is generally fantastic. The facilities are top of the class; the iMac suite being incredible, and the labs well equipped, spacious and staffed. The lectures are always of high standards etc etc as I'm sure you heard (/will hear) on the open day.

The only downside to the life science department is the student satisfaction of academic feedback (as covered by The Boar in this article). However, being a member of the chemistry department spending half their time at life science, I can tell you it is now much, much better than it was. This is one of the only reasons why Warwick dropped in the life science league tables, but it isn't much concern. In every other department of league table scores, Warwick is very competitive!

I studied Biomed at Warwick for a year before I decided to change course, but don't let that put you off, it just wasn't the right subject for me. What I would say is that, despite it's rankings for Biology, the Biomed course at Warwick is still very good; you get a lot more contact hours than you would for many courses, the standard of teaching was fairly good (compared to some modules I've been taught in WBS since) and, in my experience, the staff were always helpful and friendly and really approachable. Some of the postgrads helping out in labs were a little difficult at times, but as these change each year you might not have this problem.

I can understand you wanting to aim high, but Warwick, overall, is a very good university and ultimately, I'd say you should be aiming to go somewhere you think you'll be happy. You said you love the uni, so that's a very good sign! I know when I first went to an open day I fell in love with the place and can honestly say I've had the best time there; I love the campus the people and the SU and it's societies are outstanding.

While the course is obviously very important, I'd say when making your decision try and choose somewhere that you know you'll be happy and enjoy spending the next 3 years of your life.

Warwick is a fantastic uni for certain subjects but I don't think biology is one of them

I am a biomed student at warwick and i have been very happy with my choice to come here. The school seems quite small and friendly, staff are approachable, and there are a lot of contact time as well as options to study modules out of the discipline. The resources are great, work is marked fast and properly. I feel that the school is organised and optimistic. I have to say i think that biological sciences are taught just as good as the other subjects at warwick and i dont think people should be put off by the rankings.

I graduated from this department quite a few years ago but the modules and staff look broadly the same as when I was an undergraduate. On the whole, the course is well taught and there is plenty of contact time. All the biomedical science modules are interesting and the staff are universally friendly and approachable.

I studied medicine after this degree (I'm now a doctor working locally...) and found I was very well prepared for medical school compared with colleagues who graduated from similar courses at other institutions. If you're considering accelerated medicine afterwards then Warwick Life Sciences is a good place to start.

You also need to see the biomedical science course as part of Warwick as a whole. The campus is great and there are tonnes of opportunities around which you don't find at every university. Students that make the most of these don't find any difficulty winning their chosen graduate job, PhD place, etc afterwards.

Warwick have a great medical school. Biomed degree at Warwick is a potential pathway to MBBS.
