Okay I admit he’s not the greatest public speaker, nor a striking intellect and not the greatest leader there is …but whatever has he done to receive so much slating from the media and his critics? Many newspapers have treated his failure to speak after last Wednesdays Budget statement as being linked to some sort of drink related problem   Well I ask you have we ever seen pictures or heard stories about Kennedy being seen worse for wear in public? This so called drink problem is simply based on private reports spread by his political opponents (who fail to use their time constructively) – none of these reports ever having been authenticated. Also may I point out - so what if he has the occasional drink??? It’s a sociable thing to do! I personally think the problem with our modern politicians is they don’t drink enough. Blair (as would his close friend George Bush) could do with a good drink – it would really help him to relax, take himself less seriously and prevent him from meddling in issues that don’t require his attentions. Now back to Kennedy – as far as I’m concerned the man is a genius – he’s the liberal Democrats success story. At the last election did he not lead them to their best result in 80 years?? Did he not make the right decision about the war in Iraq? Has he not rightly moved the LD position to the right on the economy under his leadership? Has he not got some of the major strategic decisions right and thwarted some talented people on his front bench? He’s a much stronger leader than our overworked/over stressed Tony Blair and the ridiculous Michael Howard.

p.s Thatcher and Churchill were good drinkers hence they are known as some of the greatest politicians (actually I’m not sure about former but she makes for good argument). That's all i wanted to say as i'm sick of hearing people slating him for the most absurd reasons

Did you have to use the huge font! I'm sure you can put your point across adequately without big letters.

I actually listened to the whole speech, and thought it was excellent and presented some very good viewpoints (in the main) that I agree with. However, again I find that the LD's are living in a bit of a utopia where this is all possible - it is he funding crisis yet again that is the fall down of LD policy.

I don't think Kennedy should be under such media slating for himself, but that is what politics has become now - much more about the leaders. The media should spend more time educating the oublic about the issues not about the leaders private lives!

I think most people will do almost anything to undermine their opponents power.

Here's Kennedy proving that theory by both the quote and the fact that he said it:

"Opportunism has a new name, and that is Michael Howard"...

Its true though

Still I was proud of the LD's, they nearly convinced an avid Labour supporter they were vaguely credible

I give Kennedy permission to make such comments. At least they're truthful

I don't think anyone is as opportunistic as Kennedy and the Lib Dems. They can promise anything they like because they won't get elected.

Pensioners moan about the new council tax rises - Kennedy says he will scrap it - if that isn't opportunism I don't know what is

Wasn't it he was drunk on newsnight or Paxman said something about his drinking while he was interviewing him and Paxman was forced to apologise afterwards. Does anybody remember this?

Obvious isn't it?

That if you are an alcoholic you are perhaps not the best person to lead the party and certainly not the best person to lead the nation.

Personal life has an awful lot to do with public function (or really electibility to that function) which is why politicians and other public officials go to such pains to present themselves as fine upstanding members of society.
