I think that your real driving ability only comes after you pass. This is because most people lack confidence during their driving test, or maybe because they are too confident.

well there was a van infront and instead of keeping back and assessing the situation, i sped up to keep behind him for protection....
i.e. if a huge great big lorry is infront of you, you're going to use your instincts and keep close behind him because you know he will protect you
