The concept behind the book is good, especially for teenage readers - Erwachsenwerden, Selbststandigkeit and obviously die Behinderung. But beyond that its pretty awful, imo, especially when they run away to Munich and have incredibly twee and unrealistic conversations about 'life' 'friendship' etc etc etc. Also, the characters all just annoy me - they are really immature.

And as for the film..........the casting is awful and nothing really progresses throughout. Also, they cut the only exciting bits out of the book - the trip to the girls room and running away to Munich. And the whole going into the woods bit ?!?? is that really necessary!

Having said that, it is well written and I like the Ungangsprache and all that. Maybe studying it has killed it for me!

What is it that you like about it? Also, what do you consider to be its main themes? (just wanna check my revisions on the right course for Tuesday!)

That's gonna be me.. I will be stuck with a question which I don't understand and a question which I just don't have much to say about! So obvs I'll have to do the one I don't know much about.. but that's not good! Ah well, Edinburgh here I come :biggrin:

Sie war seine Tante, nicht seine Grossmutter :p:

. Und sie wusste, dass er fliehen wollte und so hilfte sie ihm. Kapitel 7 - die Brief: Ich hatte keinerlei Chance zu leben, wie ich es wollte (or something) Die Bundis sind 'lockerer' (Kapitel 18), Sabine dachte, dass er seine Familie lassen wollte.

Yep - I'll be in the exact same situation with the question. There'll be one word that I don't know, so I won't do that question. Afterwards I'll find out what it means, and realise that it was either a) obvious what the question mean or b) ridiculously easy to answer, and would have been much easier than the one I chose.
Anyway - back to revision. Uebung macht den meisten! :biggrin:

Here are some of mine:

Was waren die Hauptprobleme fuer Jugendlichen in der ehemaligen DDR, laut des Textes?

1) Sabine: "Hoffentlich lassen sie mir das Abi machen." - wenn ein Familiemitglied (z.B. Mario) nach Westen gegangen ist, wird der Junge / das Maedchen benachteiligt, was die Abitur betrifft.
2) Erzahler: "Sie braucht keine Frage ueber das Verbleiben von Ramona zu befuehren. Zu gross ist die Andst der Schueler, so kurz vor dem Schulende aufzufallen" - Keiner ist frei, seine Meinung auszudruecken.
3) Sabine: "Weisst du noch, was Frau Miller ueber die gesagt hat, die in der Kirche mitmachen?" - die Umweltsgruppe, an die Sabine eine Mitgliederin ist, ist ganz heimlich. Sie sind keine Aktivitaeten urlaubt - wieder keine Freiheit, etwas Eigenes zu machen.
4) Mario (in seinem Brief): "Ich sehe kleinerlei Chancen bei uns in DDR, mein Leben so zu gestallten, wie ich will" - es geht hier um Zivieldienst, Wahl des Studiumbereichs (nur die "nuetzlichen" Faecher sind ermutigt, keine Musik etc), keine Moeglichkeit, dass was er genisst zu machen. Der Staat hat alles schon lange vorgeplannt.
5) Sabine: "Was soll ich noch hier, in einem Land, das mich nicht fuer eine Woche zu meiner Mutti laesst?" Sabine aergert sich, weil so whl ihr Bruder als auch ihre Mutter schon im Westen sind. Die Jugendlichen fuelen sich gezwungen, eine Enscheidung zu machen: auch nach Westen gehen oder zu Hause bleiben.
6) Sabine: "Wie werde ich die Mutti wieder sehen, wie Mario?" - viele Familien wurden durch die Maur getrennt, aber auserdem gibt es eine psychologische Trennung - wollte Mario wirklich nach Westen gehen, um Musik zu spielen, oder wollte er einfach seine Familie verlassen? Der Text gibt uns viele Beispiele von den Leuten, die nach Westen gegangen sind - der Baecker, Ulrikas Vater, Thomas Vater, Sabinas Mutter. Es fehlt diesen Familien schwer, und die Jugendlichen finden es fast unmoeglich.

Die Mutter und der Vater:

1) Ueber den Vater: "private Nische" - die er in DDR gefunden hat. Die beiden haben ihr ganzes Leben in der DDR gewohnt, und im Gegensatz zu der Zukunft ihrer Kinder ist ihre Zukunft "gesichert".
2) Sie sind der Teil der Familie, die "durch die Grenze zerstoert wurde" - besonders vor der Marios Brief ist die Atmosphaere in der Familie gespannt. "Diese Ungewissenheit und Warterei macht mir verrueckt" (-Frau Dehnert/Mutti). Sie quaelt sich fuer das Geschehende, der Vater ist "in sich gekehrt" - die emotionale Seite der Situation in der DDR ist gezeigt.
3) Die Mutti ist in einer Zwiespalt: weiter ihre Familie zu trennen um sich "um Mario zu kuemmern", dadurch sie ihre muetterlichen Sorgen beruhigen wuerde, oder mit Sabine und Herr Dehnert zu bleiber, damit ihre Familie noch stark bleiben koennte.
4) Der Vater wollte nie raus, und err moechtete, dass seine Kinder "Erfahrungen mit unseren Land machten". Es tut him weh, dass siene Frau und seine Kinder seine Verhaeltniss zu Leben nicht teilen.
5) Die Mutti wuerde gern im Sueden reisen - sie findet es unakzeptabel, das ihr Staat den Leuten nicht vertrauet. Der Vati sagt, er hat alles was er braucht.

1) Er ist "unendlich traurig", dass sein Vater vor 5 Jahren nach Westen gegangen ist.
2) Seine Grosseltern haben nach Westen gegangen, er weiss, wie es dort ist. Sein Opa sagt, dass es unstabil und hektish ist, er mag besonders die Freiheit, alle moeglichste buecher zu lesen.
3)Sabine: "Thomas hat mit erst die Kraft gegeben wegzugehen". Er und seine Grosseltern akzeptierte ihre Plaene.
4) "Er hat noch nicht einmal darauf geantwortet", ob er auch nach Westen will. Was bedeutet es?
5) "Weisst du, eigentlich waere ich gerne mit dir abgehauen, aber ich habe nicht den Mut dazu gehabt". - schreibt Thomas in seinem Brief (Sabine ist schon im Hamburg).
6) Doch sagt er, "Unsere Familie bleibt jedenfalls, bis zum bitteren Ende. Mutti will ihre Patienten nicht im Stich lassen. Den Grosseltern will sie es auch nicht antun". - bemerkt ihr, dass er das Wort "bitter" benutzt. Hat er keine mehr Glauben in der System?
7) Nach der Wende "vertritt unsere Wandzeitung nicht nur eine, naemlich richtige meinung, sondern ganz unterschiedene". "Meine Mutti zugibt, dass sie Vater Unrecht getan hat. Sie wollte ihn zu einer Karriere zwingen, die er nicht wollte"
8) Jetzt ist in Leipzig alles verschieden. "Also, die Welt steht Kopf".
