how fattening is popcorn? and a running question

I need to try to lose some weight, and am going to go about it by exercising more and eating better. The problem is that I really love to snack. To stop munching entirely wouldn't work, at least not until I'm used to it. Weaning off having a few bags of chips and a couple of chocolate bars a week is going to be hard enough as it is... So, I was thinking about popcorn. The kind you make in a pan, with some kind of vegetable oil, no salt, no butter. Just plain. Is that going to be ok to eat a few nights a week or is it less healthy than I'm hoping?

My second question is about running/jogging. Whenever I run, I go the same loops. One takes about 12-15 minutes, depending on how in shape I am. The other takes perhaps 5 minutes. Is running one of those loops going to make any difference in loosing weight? Should I try to start going for longer runs/jogs?

Lastly, if I cut back on snacks like chips and run a little bit every other day or so for a month or two, will I notice a difference? I'm not very overweight, just have some flab on my legs and butt that I'd like to get rid of (or at least reduce).

In October I was pretty chunky, so I cut out all of the crap in my diet and now I'm slim. In fact, I've gone from a 38-40 waste size to well into a 36, with a BMI of 24. I also did a little more exercise, but nothing extreme. You'll notice a difference if you do it properly. Losing weight is easy, it's just control and dedication. Don't expect instant results, keep at it and you'll be fine.

Just to note, I went hardcore about it and haven't eaten anything considered "Junk" since I stopped, but it probably wont hurt too much to have a bit of crap in every once in a while, preferably after a meal. The key is to stop eating in between meals.

how will adding a bit of salt make popcorn fattening? And come on this is popcorn for gods sake. there's nothing fattening about it.

unless you're the type of person who can eat a piece of lettuce and put weight on, in which case, ok i see your point.

Maybe she was just referring to the Butterkist sugar-laden, toffee, butter and whatever else they chuck on it type! Surely plain popcorn would be fine! :p:

While plain popcorn is a less fattening then certain other snacks, and the corn itself is not fattening, its fryed in oil! Why do you think potatoes are healthy and chips are fattening and considered junk food, its the oil.

You should not need to snack on things like that! if you are so hungry, have a fruit.

If you have so much junk food and sweets, cutting them out could on its own prove enough to loose weight but the excersize you do is very little, you do not say how often you do it but a minimum of 2 hours a week would be very beneficial, it does more htne just loose weight, it makes you healthy, it helps your mind aswell. Im at a good weight i do 2-4 hours of excersize a week (right now slightly less due to revision, thou saying that i just got back from playing football for 3 hours, i did the same for 2 hours on sunday and did weight training on tuesday so have done 6 hours since sunday) not because i need to loose weight but because i want to stay in good shape, at my peak i can cycle 90km in 5 and a half hours, offroad.

You can just as easily do popcorn in the microwave without any oil, or in a cheap popcorn maker. My housemate got one free at freshers fair so they cant be expensive.
