Hi Peeps,

I've been offered places at both the University of Edinburgh and the Univeristy of Bristol to do a Postgraduate Degree. I was wondering which is the most prestigous out of the two universities.

Thanks,

Wini.

P.S. Which of the two has the best reputation with employers?

Bristol

ummm... well for what it's worth I would say Edinburgh, especially from the view of non-english people: Edinburgh is probably the most well known city in Scotland, whereas Bristol is well... just another English city... Then again, I could be biased being from Northern Ireland, which is closer to Scotland than England.

Bristol. But I hate the concept of prestige.

There is no doubt that statement is incorrect -- it's definitely arguable.

Edinburgh is much older (given a charter in 1582), has more distinguished alumni, and has more research achievements. At the moment Bristol may be a few places higher in the university league tables, but as the consensus on this board quite rightly goes you shouldn't get too hung up on those.

As JimBob says, if you go to Edinburgh you'd be at the most prestigious uni the country, whereas if you go to Bristol it could be seen as just going to another English place which isn't as good as Oxbridge. Also there are mainly English people are on this board. If you ask any Scot they'd be likely to say Edinburgh, and I don't think that would be just through blind patriotism -- it's probably because they know something about it too.

Ditto! its just english people often dont consider edinburgh. beautiful city btw!
it really depends on the subject. Maybe overall Bristol is more highly regarded but not by much.

If it was for Law then Edinburgh would do a different course, including Scottish Law rather than English Law, and I'm not sure that counts as a qualifying law degree for professional requirements. And it is four years long.

If its for Law I would definitely do an English course unless you are intending to practice in Scotland.

English law
English law differs from Scots law in a number of important respects. The needs of applicants who are contemplating legal practice in England and Wales will generally be better met by studying in a University south of the border. But applicants from England who are contemplating careers in professions other than Law will not be disadvantaged by having a Scottish LLB. Edinburgh graduates wishing to convert to English law can gain some exemptions from English Law Society examinations; this matter should be discussed with your Director of Studies.
I'd say Bristol, but don't let that be the sole factor in deciding!

Out of the 19 UK Universities that my country recognised for Law, Edinburgh ain't one of them... But Bristol is.

So I would say Bristol... (that's in terms of reputation) but I would second that of lilsunflower, there are of course several other factors to consider in making your final choice.

St Andrews is older and more prestigious than Edinburgh and has better teachers in Scotland

Thats true, but St Andrews has a reputation for being full of rahs aswell. Edinburgh is more accesible and is much more vibrant, and it was my first choice. However, nearly everyone I know has been rejected, including myself. It comes down to where you feel most comfortable living, and although I liked St-And alot, I know that I'd prefer Edinburgh or Cardiff as they are larger, and more cosmopolitan.
