Friend Made Mountain Out Of Molehill

:frown: A couple of months ago, when I was at home in the evening, as there was hardly anything decent on TV, I thought I'd have a look on the Net and check my emails, so I thought, as a bit of fun, I'd get hundreds of mail order catalogues sent to my friend's home and email address. My friend was easy-going, so I thought they wouldn't mind. But I was absolutely horrified yesterday, as I was visited by a Police Officer who stated that an official complaint had been made, which had caused considerable distress, and I was also informed NOT to contact them ever again, and luckily it was a caution at that time, although, I am informed that if they should visit again, I'd be taken down the police station and formally questioned. WHAT SORT OF FRIEND DOES THAT?

haaahaaaaa wtf that's a bloody annoying thing to do (what you did, i mean). don't be offended that your friend acted that way. he/she probably didn't know it was you anyway.

Maybe he/she momentarily had forgot it was you sending them....hold on, so you're saying he/she would have had no idea it was you sending them as a joke? I think it's pretty funny...NOW, but at the time things like this aren't  I pranked my ex-housemate with a Green Party letter (him being staunchly Conservative), he found it was from me, and a day or so later, he retaliated. He had somehow found the template from my university department, a plagiarism letter! I was ****-scared, didn't think it was anything other than real, because it literally was the real McCoy. So without further ado, i was nerve-wracked, thinking how and where i could possibly have plagiarised in any of my assessed work, went to the department, they investigated it seriously...tried to track things down on computers...meanwhile, back in my student accomodation, saw a friend of that friend walk into the kitchen, he was clearly struggling to contain himself  , thus i knew it immediately that i had been hoaxed good n' proper.

The annoying thing was it was last day of term, my mum was there with me that day and i still had to go along with this 'hoax' theme for hours after i found out it not to be one...i basically wasn't willing to 'dob' my hoaxer friend into things. I was given the 'all-clear' by the department...my friend was now a wee bit worried but had failed his year at university anyway so were he to be found out (which he was later, and given a *******ing for wasting departmental time and resources to track down emails on computer et al), he'd probably have been kicked off his course

Lesson is: Just be careful! Some people take the hoaxing thing and the nature of it rather too seriously. I was in tears that day, at one point, because i thought the email i received was the real thing!

As someone said, could it have been that the person you did that to didn't know it was you that sent them, informing the police, who then tracked it to you and made the visit without your friend knowing? If he/she realised it was only a prank from a friend they may be completely understanding and would have let it go as a joke, but if it was completely out of the blue from some stranger then they're likely to be more upset.
I'd stick with the warning not to get in contact immediately in case he/she does know it was you and still feels this way, but try and get a mutual friend to talk to them and see if they know, and if so, if there are any chances for reconciliation.
Hope it works out.

You're an idiot. And very very sad. Do you seriously have fun putting someone's email address into lots of different websites? Get a hobby.
To be fair, if you did that to me, i'd probably punch you in the throat.
I thought it was quite amusing.
Once this guy i know signed me up for a rude website for a laugh, and so in retaliation i volunteered him to be sent to africa to work with cafod.
it was a bit of fun and calling the police was going well over board. its just a few catalogues and mail. everyone gets them.
are u sure it wasnt his/her parents who were doing the complaining?

Yep, especially if gay/lesbian themed magazines were sent

It must surely have been the mother/father, as perhaps the boy/girl/friend of OP would have some idea of why these magazines were being sent?

i think thats hilarious!!!!!! so funny what a good rank to bad they took it TOTALLY the wrong way,

i mean its not like its very serious your not endangering anyones safety so i dont see the harm

if u can contact them somehow or get a message to them through another friend do it and explain it was all for giggles
Do you know how annoying it is getting hundreds of spam emails a day? You can't just turn them off. S/He might have had to get a new email address, and that's even more hassle than getting a new phone number.

Wouldn't you need to start going out with him first?

Oh no, i'm fairly indescriminate with my throat punching. It can occur in all spheres of social interaction (including random strangers, children, the elderly and the disabled).

As long as you're not bigoted and punch all races, genders and orientations with no prejudice or selection....

But to the OP, I can understand their reaction for the reasons mentioned by other posters and also, even if your friend did or didn't know that it was you, it is kind of a betrayal of their trust giving out information of theirs etc that you have no right to give.
I think that the most annoying thing would be having them sent to your house.

What a childish thing to do.
I sent condoms to my friends house. That's more amusing than catalogues really. No police though. God I'm mature.
