Is it possible to undertake a Ph.D whilst undergoing residential training?

First of all, "residential training" is not a term used in the UK. I'm unclear whether you mean during clinical school or during the first few years as a junior doctor.

Either way, I am not aware of anywhere that does this without extending the length of your training. The MB/PhD programmes are 5/6 years long, after three years of pre-clinical, so you would graduate 2/3 years behind the rest of your starting cohort. Most people I know who do PhDs as doctors take time out from training to do it, either as part of an established academic training programme or between career stages. It may be possible to do a part-time PhD alongside your clinical work, but this would be tricky and would take much longer than the standard three years a PhD normally takes.

It is possible but very few posts exist. One of my collegues is doing GP training and a PhD at the same time.
